Faint positives followed by negatives?

Hi, everyone. I came from the TTGP board to ask a question; I hope you don't mind. I apologize in advance if my question has been asked already. I couldn't find it.
I received a BFP last night at 11 dpo with some very diluted urine. It was on a Dollar Tree (VeriQuick) test. I followed up with a FRER test, which showed a line that was much more faint. This morning at 12 dpo I tested with another FRER pink dye and a digital. The line on the FRER was so faint I could barely see it, and may have been an evap line. The digital was negative. I tested again with two more Dollar Tree tests (both available brands), and again got similar results to last night's (two clear positives).

I'm feeling confused. My question is, shouldn't I be seeing a darker line this morning, given that I used FMU? Why are the Dollar Tree tests showing a darker line, when I'm pretty sure they are the same sensitivity as FRER? I'm questioning now whether I am in fact pregnant or just experiencing a CP and will get my period tomorrow or the next day as expected (I have been having cramps on and off). I know the only way to be sure is to wait and keep testing every day or every other day, but I'm feeling incredibly anxious and unable to wait, which is why I'm hoping you ladies might have some information based on experience that will help me make sense of this. Thank you in advance.

ETA: Also, does anyone have experience with the Dollar Tree VeriQuick or New Choice brands? I'm wondering if these are known for false positives or bad batches. Google didn't come up with much.

Re: Faint positives followed by negatives?

  • How dark a line is doesn't matter. I've had positives followed by negatives and it was unfortunately an early loss. It could still be too early for a digital. If you test again use a pink dye test and if you get a line within the time frame then it's positive. Good luck!

Thanks for the response. I know any line, however faint, is still a positive. What confuses me is that the line isn't any darker, even though I used FMU (instead of using very diluted urine in the evening). It makes me wonder if my HCG isn't increasing, meaning a likely loss. Or if I simply re-tested too soon.

A line doesn't have to increasingly get darker. It all depends on how much dye is in the test itself. That said, I know how it is to feel so unsure. Test again in another day or two. I hope you can get some answers soon. Hugs.

Darkness of lines has always told me a lot in early pregnancy. When the lines barely got darker or were the same Color they resulted in chemical pregnancies for me. Good luck to you.
Thanks for responding. Would you expect a darker line in the morning than you got the previous evening? Maybe 12 hours later?

ETA: I forgot to add that my temp this morning is higher, not lower - though I didn't sleep all that well.

When I first got my BFP, at 11 DPO, the 89 cent Walmart tests were giving me a much darker line than the FRERs I took. I took them in the afternoon. The next morning, I used FMU and took a digital that was negative, and a FRER that was also still super faint. I am now 12 weeks pregnant. I did not take a FRER again until a week later and then the line was really dark. Don't read too much into line darkness! Right now you are pregnant.

Fx for you for a healthy baby!

    ETA more detail.

  • I just went through a CP; I had a positive digital, a positive FRER, and a barely there positive Wondfo. Over the next week the Wondfos ( I had a ton) slowly got lighter; I started bleeding and two days later started getting negatives. I had my betas drawn to confirm the early loss.

Moral of the story: there's nothing you can do to save a chemical pregnancy. If you are really freaked out call your doctor and tell them your concerns. Your hCG levels should double every 48 hours. If you have to test at home, doing it daily won't show you much difference; testing every other day or every two days will, unless the tests have different amounts of dye. It's really not an accurate way to tell what's going on ( says the serial tester that needed to take her own advice).

Good luck, and I hope this pregnancy progresses normally for you!

  • @3houlagirl I'm sorry for your loss. I'll probably test again tomorrow (instead of tonight, like I know I'll want to). I guess if hCG doubles every 48 hours, I shouldn't have expected much of a difference between last night and this morning. It's hard not to test and to give it time when I so desperately want answers now!

  • Unless you start cramping and bleeding I'd assume you're pregnant...digital tests are less sensitive than cheapie tests so you may have just tested too early to turn a digi.

I never got dark lines on wondfo cheapies, even at 21dpo. I did get a dark FRER line at 14dpo. I'm 16 weeks pregnant now. The darkness of a line doesn't necessarily mean a loss.
  • FWIW My tests were really light no matter whether morning or night till a week or two after I missed my period. Then they got darker. I had quite a few cheapies left, so I'd pee on them randomly those first couple weeks till they ran out. I'm 10 weeks now and have already had 2 good ultrasounds and actually my early HCG numbers were above the normal ranges. You can't always tell anything from how dark the lines are and 12 hours in my opinion is waaay too soon to expect a darker line - or at least it would have been for me. Try to give it a day or two and test again. If you still have a line, you are still pregnant.
  • @ugotstarbucked and @riderchik Thank you both! I honestly can't believe how nerve-wracking this is. While I was trying, I was never able to imagine how I'd feel beyond the point where I saw those two lines. Now I know! I'm so happy and grateful, but scared, too. It's a complete emotional roller coaster (and I'm sure the hormones aren't helping)!

Also, it is really awesome (and comforting) to see other past TTGP-ers here!

  • Hi your situation sounds similar to what I went through. I took my first test on a Friday night with an internet cheapie wondfo test and it came out with a very faint positive- that same night I took a walmart 89cent test and it also came out with a faint positive. I took another 89 cent test the next day and it again had a very very faint positive (less then the day before).. On Saturday night/Sunday I used the wondfo, First response, more 89cent test and all came back negative..I figured I had a chemical pregnancy and I stopped testing.. Well on Wednesday night I went to the gym and I just didn't feel right.. So I went home and took another test.. Sure enough it came up positive.. I went and got my blood work done because I felt like a crazy person.. On Thursday my HCG was 23 and by Monday it was 304.. So I was just SUPER early when I began testing.. My test didn't begin to get much darker until the next week... I had an US done a week or so ago and I measured 6 weeks 4 days with a 129 heartbeat and I was told the baby is right where it should be. I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts and hope that everything goes good for you.
