Belly support while running

Hello all,

I looked for discussions regarding running and didn't find anything, I apologize in advance if I'm duplicating.

I am currently 26 weeks and have been getting back into running (with dr.'s approval) after a "threatened abortion" in my first trimester. I jog slow and only manage to do about a mile. I have been getting what seem like cramps in my lower hip areas (away from where baby girl is) while running. I asked my doctor and she said nothing is "wrong." She suggested that I walk or get a belly support and that my body just may not be used to the weight while running. Has anyone been running? What have you found helps you to keep active? I don't mind walking but prefer running ☺️. Thank you in advice for your feedback!

Re: Belly support while running

  • I sometimes get mild cramping in my lower abdomen/hip area if the drawstring of my pants or shorts is tied a bit too tight below my bump. Letting it out a bit (at the risk of losing my pants!) usually fixes the problem. I don't feel like I need any extra belly support at the moment but that may change at the third tri rolls on. I'm 27 weeks and jog about 20km a week.

I also find that my lower back gets stiff if I run continuously for any longer than about 25-30 minutes several times a week, so I recently switched to doing two full runs and two interval runs (alternating 10 min jogging/5 min walking) and usually take a day off in between.

There's a weekly workout thread on Wednesdays that you may like to check out.  I remember that others have commented on belly bands there in the past.  Good luck!

I'm a runner.  This belt came recommended on my last BMB.  It's worked well for me during this pregnancy and my first.  I wear it under my shirt but over my tights/shorts.

I'm also a runner and have been running consistently throughout the pregnancy. I'm just now, at 28 weeks, starting to get the the point of looking for a support belt, mostly to alleviate some back pain. This belt mentioned above is the one all my research has suggested, including an article I found in Runner's World! So I'm planning to order it soon:) I did read to wear it over clothes to prevent chafing. Good luck with your running!
  • Another runner here. Ive been having pelvic pain for weeks (and I'm only shy of 25). I did a ton of research into runners and what physical therapists recommend and bought a Gabrialla. It doesn't fix all pain, but it does minimize it. Until you have a really
Obvious bump, deciding where to put it can be a challenge- be prepared to futz with it for a while.
  • Thank you ladies! Good work on the running, I commend anyone who exercises/runs while pregnant, it's definitely a challenge☺️
  • I've been on a no strenuous activity ban with no lifting for about a month now fighting a bladder infection and occasional bleeding so I haven't been running in a while myself. 2nd trimester I started having issues of getting dizzy running longer than 10 minutes so I was doing short sprints with walking breaks until my ban. Tomorrow I should get results from a follow up urine culture on whether I'll need to do a hospital stay for iv antibiotics or if it's finally cleared up and I'll have the go ahead to start getting back into exercising. I'm due April 12 and there's a 5k I do every year at a water park in June that I want to be back in shape for
  • DH got me some Ingrid and Isabel yoga pants for Christmas that do a good job of giving belly support. I just googled them and found them on the Nordstrom and Amazon websites.

  • I have been running about 10-15 miles per week and just started to experience some pelvic discomfort. It appears to set in the day of running distances over the 4 mile mark. So, I'm going to order the Gabrialla belt and decrease the length and speed to see if that helps. Good luck with your running and Listen to your body!
  • Thanks ladies!!! I ordered the Gabrialla and have to say it has helped my hip pain, still working through the cramps. If anyone is ordering it go with a size up. I measured at a small and it is a bit tight! I am going to exchange for a medium. Good luck to everyone, kudos for staying active!!
