Anyone else Rh negative?

This is my first pregnancy. I am probably just freaking myself out but the closer the big day comes the more it worries me. I have been trying to read into it more and I feel like it's made my paranoia worse. I am scheduled to have a RhoGAM shot at the next appointment which the doctor said will take care of any possible issues through birth. I guess what I'm looking for here is just reassurance that things will be ok. I need to stay off of the Internet and figured you all would be a little more helpful. Thank you.

  • I just came across a woman who lost her baby 2 hours after delivery to Hydrops. I looked that up and came across the rh negative issue. I just am new to all of this and needed a little reassurance that is all.
  • Is your spouse RH-? Biggest relief of my life was realizing we had the same blood type.

You need to do more research, as that is very uncommon. Maybe also, try asking your OB or midwife more questions. I'm sorry to hear of that mothers loss, that's horrible.

Sorry for being so frank, but being RH neg with appropriate treatment is nothing to worry about.

Edit to say, I suppose I can't tell you what to or what not to worry about but if you're following everything you need to from your doc, then I would place my energy somewhere else, personally.

There are WAY bigger fish to be fried and things to be concerned about tonight. Chat with your doc at your appointment.

  • No he is not. I will I just didn't want to come across anything else to add to my worries. Just didn't know the possibilities/how foolproof the shot actually was.. it doesn't help that I am a slight hypochondriac. It's just the closer it gets the more I psych myself out.
  • I'm rh negative and not worried. They give you the shot (which hurts like fucking hell omg) and it protects you and baby through birth, then they give you and baby another at birth if baby has positive blood. From what I understand, complications after the rhogam shot is slim. Don't worry mama!
  • Thank you @mamakeeg‌! Really do appreciate the positivity! :)
  • I'm Rh negative too and had the shot with all three of my previous pregnancies. It's totally not a big deal at all. I don't even remember it hurting. I've never had a problem and go in for my shot this Thursday. There is nothing for you to be worried about as long as you get the shot. You and baby will be just fine.
  • I'm rh neg and never worried about it. Stay off Dr Google it will save you lots of worries. I had the shots twice with my first and now already once with this one. I really didn't find that it hurt any worse than a normal needle.
  • I am Rh- and not worried. All of my sisters are and had no complications and their husbands were Rh+. I will be getting my shot Tuesday.

  • The shot is seriously no big deal. It did not hurt whatsoever and I'm not very tough. Literally a slight prick.
  • Certianly not something to worry about, i have issues with bleeding throughout my pregnancies and have to have the shot every time i have a bleed. They are now suggesting i get the shot every 4 weeks just to be safe. All has been fine with me and both pregnancies but ask your midwife if you are still concerned
  • I am Rh negative and my husband had positive blood, so I received the shot before my daughter was born. Once I delivered they tested her blood and she is negative as well so we didn't need the second shot.
With this pregnancy I need to get the shot but doctors said not to get it yet since I have a full placenta previa and he wanted to focus about the more severe issues first. I'm sure I will be getting it within the next few weeks.

Just remember that the doctors will be happy to address any concerns you have about it. When you go to Labor and Delivery just let them know as well when you check in (I was asked multiple times). I think it's good you are reading about it so you are aware of the issues you could face - just remember not to worry too much
  • Don't freak out , as long as us negative blood types take our shots we should be fine
  • Also negative, first pregnancy. I had to get my first shot really early because of some spotting...it was no big deal. Also, for peace of mind, my doctor told me the real reason first time moms get the shot is because of potential complications with the second pregnancy. Apparently it is pretty unlikely for maternal blood to cross the placenta with the first, but in the second and beyond it can happen, so preparing the body is the recommended thing to do. Don't stress-- it is super routine!

I am RH- and yes: I was a little freaked out in the beginning because I did not understand what that meant for me or the baby. I talked to my midwife and she assured me that in this day and with proper medical monitoring, it is not an issue. The shot left me a little sore, but that's it. My only advice is to not wear your ratty underwear to the appt for your shot as it goes in your thigh. :) (Not making light of your worry. Just trying to reassure you)

My Grandma and great-Grandma were also RH- and went on to have 3 healthy pregnancies each with no complications. So please do not worry, get your Rhogam shot, and enjoy your pregnancy as much as you can.
  • I'm rh- as well. Even though this is my first pregnancy, due to some early bleeding I have to get the shot every 12 weeks. I've had 2 so far and they're really not a big deal. Where I live, they do it in your arm like a flu shot. I have another one coming up in February, then one after baby is born.

    Anniversary

  • Ladies I can't thank you enough. Thank you all for the reassurance. I feel quite a bit better about it. :)
  • Also glad to know it is a lot more common than my doctor made it seem. Good luck to all of you, time is flying by!
  • Rh neg here also. Getting the shot on Tuesday. As pp have said, with proper monitoring it shouldnt be a problem!
  • Do you know what your blood type is? I didnt know before my first pregnancy that I am O neg and ya a shot in the butt is annoying but not I'm happy to know that as a universal donor I will always be able to give blood to either of my kids if needed. Positive spin for me:)
  • Im rh- also. I got the shot last time and it wasn't too bad as shots go.

Question: my DH doesn't know his blood type. He could be negative also which would mean I wouldn't need the shot. Is there an easy way to get his type checked? He's a bit of a pansy when it comes to needles.
  • I am as well and get my shot tomorrow morning. I'm high risk and my doctor said its no big deal. My sister was as well and had 2 beautiful little boys. I think you're freaking yourself out. Talk to your dr, I'm sure he/she will address your concerns!
  • It's no big deal as long as you get your rhogam shot. I'm getting mine weds. Also you don't have to get it in the butt you can get it in the arm. My first shot didn't hurt at all.

  • Another Rh- person here.  Have had the Rhogam shot several times.  It's no big deal and it does what it's supposed to.  You have nothing to worry about.

  • Also RH-. I'm not too worried about it. I probably don't even need the shot, since we only plan on having one child, but I'm getting it anyway (on Monday).
  •   I am and DH is positive.  I get the shot at 28 weeks each time.  So far my kids only have negative blood so no after birth shot for me, but we shall see after this one.  I'm not concerned about it.
  • It's pretty common. I'm a FTM too and am rh- too. I'm sure you'll be fine. As long as you don't get in a wreck or fall badly before the shot you should be perfectly fine.
  • I am RH negative. Ive not had any reason to worry, my mum had 2 healthy children, also my partners sister. Sadly my partner isn't the same blood group so i have to endure the needle again, which i found slightly painful the first time, but nothing to be worries about.
