Cloth Diapering

Umbilical cord?

Do I need to buy disposables to use until the umbilical cord stump falls off? This is my first baby so I've no experience with that part. I'd like to start cloth right away but I'm nervous...

Thanks in advance!

Re: Umbilical cord?

  • No, you don't have too. We used either prefolds that were easy to fold so it didn't rub, or a few fitteds/AIO's with the snap down rise for the cord. There were no problems with that.

  • I had to use disposables for about a day when DS cord got infected. But, I also didn't have newborn size diapers. I was using small GMD prefolds on a preemie sized kid. So if you have newborn diapers I don't think it would be a problem at all.

  • I used disposables with both kids until the stump fell off. With DS none of mine were low enough so I tried folding them down but they still rubbed. I didn't think it would matter but after awhile it got red and irritated and bled a bit so I stopped until it fell off. With DD I didn't chance it and just waited.

  • For a quick second I thought this was going to be about placenta encapsulation. I don't know why lol.
