Red Palm Oil (NCDR obvs)

Do any of you use this?  I saw some at Trader Joes and picked it up.

Re: Red Palm Oil (NCDR obvs)

  • I like to try new things.  Be thankful.  It's why I'm watching Homeland.
  • I don't know that I've ever heard of "red" palm oil.  The plantain chips I love are cooked in palm oil.  Check the ingredients... is it palm oil, or palm kernal oil?

It's different.  I think they're from the same plant, but the red palm oil is from the fruit and it's supposedly much better for you.  It looks similar to coconut oil in the jar, but it's orange colored.
  • Okay, that's what I was getting at.  Yes the palm oil from the fruit rather than from the seed is good stuff.  Let me know how you like it!  I recommend frying plantain chips in it!

Blah.  When I visited my sister in Senegal, they cooked a "treat" for me - a big fish soaked in palm oil.  It is a strong flavor.  Bright yellow/orange.  Unless I'm thinking of the other type of palm whatever oil.

This wasn't helpful, but there you go.
That sounds like it.  Was it gross?  I read it tastes carroty.  I should probably just open up the jar and try some, huh?
  • Update:  I opened the jar intending to try some and it smelled disgusting and had a thin flaky layer on top.  I wimped out.

    see. a challenge!
I didn't picture it as a challenge, though.  I pictured it as the cool ranch flavor of coconut oil.  I was apparently wrong, though.
  • Isn't palm oil the one that is causing all those gorillas to be killed?
Orangutans, I guess.  Some companies are deforesting their habitat to make the oil.  Now I feel like I bought hate oil.
  • Ew.  Raw cacao nibs are disgusting, too.  Stop experimenting with food, Stoney.

You just had bad ones. Which are so easy with raw nibs. The go bad so fast. Assuming they were quality to begin with.
Okay.  Because they tasted a little fermented.  Did they just go bad?  Should I return them to Whole Foods and get my effing $10 back?
