Shots

My little guy has his 8 wk appt today. He is getting 3 shots plus something he has to take orally, I forget the name. Im nervous about everything. What if he gets a fever? Should I take his temp hourly? If it reaches 100.4 do I still take him to the ER even tho we know its the shots? I will ask the dr all of this just wanting to know others experiences!
Thanks!

Re: Shots

  • LO just got hers yesterday AM. She slept most of the day afterward but woke up and felt better around dinner time. Don't take the temp hourly. Kiss his forehead and see if it's warmer than normal. If so, wait 15 min then do it again. If still warm then do temp. FWIW LO did not get a fever.

  • Thanks everyone! For all I know L could act like this is just another day orrr it could be a total nightmare. Which is what Im preparing myself for...the nightmare. He is a particular baby and when he gets pissed he does the whole holding his breath thing. For instance I was clipping his nails and I got his skin (we both cried and I promised I would stick to filing for the time being) and a very serious meltdown ensued. So I can only imagine what mulitple shots are going to do to him.
@Becks517‌ maybe I should play that song in the office real loud to drown out his screams!
  • If your LO's were fussy after their shots, did it last for multiple days? Or where they back to normal the next day?

Tylenol saved us.  But he never got a fever and was only fussy for one day.  Fussy is probably an understatement.  Screaming like I have never heard is more accurate.
The screaming like that is an adverse reaction. My oldest child had that, at his 2nd DTP (before the DTaP came out). You should let your pediatrician know, so it can be noted in his records. For my ds, at all shots after I was instructed to give Tylenol before any shots (yours may recommend advil, we have a family allergy to that so I don't use it).

All these years later, over two decades later, I still remember the hours of screams :(

My dd had two shots at her appt a few weeks ago and was fussy and warm for a day. I gave tylenol, she was fine the next day.
  • My LO just got his shots almost 4 hours ago. I had been worrying for days about it! I nursed him during his needles (one in each leg) and he only cried for a second when the needle went in. By the time I got him dressed he was smiling away. He has been sleeping pretty much since we've been home. He was a bit fussier than normal. The doc told me to give him Tylenol when we got home and then as needed. I am worried about how the night will go and if he will be crazy fussy and in pain but I am hoping for the best! Your LO will be just fine!!
  • LO screamed getting his shots, the oral one he just drank down. I nursed him and he calmed and went to sleep for the rest of the day, still sleepy the next day( yesterday) but today is back to his normal happy playful self
  •  I'm sure he's fine, too! My ds who I posted about, is now a married, college educated engineer :)  it was just so scary at the time. I'd mention it-I doubt the ped would roll their eyes, it's just good to have it in the chart.
  • LO just had her shots on Tuesday.  She did run a slight fever and seemed more crabby then anything.  Before she even got her shots her Dr went over everything and even gave us instruction about how much tylenol to give her.  We did give her some tuesday night and wednesday night but she has been pretty good

  • L screamed like I thought during the shots. I nursed him right after. I gave him tylenol at 2 am he was running kind of warm. Then again at 2 pm this afternoon. He has been real sleepy which I am attributing to the shots. He slept for 2.5 hours in his swing. I SAID HIS SWING!! This never ever happens. What amount did your pedi tell u for tylenol? L is 11.5 lbs and he told me just a bit less than 2.5 ml.
  • My little guy had some of his shots this morning. He cried a little at first, but then seemed fine until this afternoon when he started screaming hysterically, which he never does. Delayed reaction I guess. He isn't much of a crier at all, usually. I couldn't remember the Tylenol dosage either. I googled it and up to 11 pounds, every site I saw said 1.5 ml. At 12 pounds they can have 2.5 ml, according to the charts. He is almost 12 pounds, but I stuck to the 1.5, which seemed to be enough for him.

Both the pedi and pharmacist told me 10-15 mg per kg of weight. LO is 4.44 kg (9 lb 12 oz). Worked out to be 1.4 mL.
