Breast milk storage bag recommendations

I'm hoping to start building up my milk storage stash so I've been looking at reviews on Amazon for storage bags.

However, I'm struggling to decide which ones to buy as so many reviewers seem upset about the storage bags for their pumped breast milk. Lots of leaking and freezer burn issues but it's hard to tell from online reviews only.

Has anyone had success with a certain brand? I have a Madela pump but am open to other brands, too.

  • I use lansinoh bags too and I've had no problems!

  • Thanks @kstirton‌ and @sweetbabyrahe‌ - the Lansinoh bags are the most popular on Amazon so I was leaning towards those. The Madela reviews scared me @-)

  • I use the generic kind from target and like them.

  • I use target brand as well and haven't had an issue thus far.
  • @NinerGirl52‌ maybe just some angry moms who don't know how to seal bags :-q

  • I used the target up and up when I EP for my twins. Loved them and plan to use them again this time.

  • Just a note- the target brand bags have 2 zippers (I am not sure what other brands have)- so it makes a nice and tight seal and nearly impossible for the milk to leak.
  • I purchased the Nuk bags on Amazon and have really liked them so far. They are a thick plastic with double zipper and freezer proof.

I use Lansinoh. I try to buy on BOGO 50% AT meijer since I use a lot. Haven't thawed too much yet, but had one bag burst a seam at the bottom. Thaw in a Tupperware!

PS- have thought about making a thread for this, but I think my milk takes on the smell and flavor of the bag. He still drinks it though.
  • Awesome thanks @OLJ1010‌ :-bd

  • I started out using Lansinoh with DS1 and had some problems with leaking. I switched to Up&Up and I can probably count on one hand how many times they have leaked. Mind you I used them for well over a year.

  • I've used the medela ones without a problem, but I got them for free from a friend and I've done all of my thawing in the fridge. I read some of those angry Amazon reviews and I think the women who had leaks thawed In warm water? I like that it came with an adaptor so I can pump straight into the bag.

  • I pump directly into the kiinde twist bags. You can get a little adapter so the screw right onto your pump. No leaks because they aren't flimsy and they have a screw on cap. Also can attach them directly to a kiinde twist holder and nipple to turn the bag into a bottle but LO has had trouble with how tough and hard the nipple is so we're waiting for her jaw to get stronger...for now I pump into the bags and pour into another bottle when needed.

  • I love lanisoh. DH said there were only a few leaks and most of the time it was in a bag that got bent during the freezing process. I tried medela because of the adapter, but I didn't like them.

  • I'm using Lansinoh and like how easy they are to fill and get the air out. I don't know about freezer burn yet though.

I've been meaning to try to mini cereal box trick (to cut off the top of the box and then freeze the bag in it so it's a nice stackable block) and think this would work with these bags, but haven't gotten around to getting the cereal box yet.

  •  If you are in the US and have health insurance, it might cover the bags-mine gives a 150pk every 90 days. Mine gives Ameda bags (since tht is the pump it covers). I have to call to order them (I haven't yet as I have only used a few of the initial supply, I return to work this month).

I havent tried other brands but free is awesome, just an FYI to maybe call your insurer and see what they cover.
  • I use the ameda bags my insurance company provides. No issues yet. I thaw in fridge or warm water.

  • I should have added: I had a friend who donated milk to me and all she used was Lansinoh bags.  When comparing the Up&Up brand to those, the Lansinoh leaked/tore when thawing way more than my target bags ever did...but then again, it may have a lot to do with how you freeze them/store them in your freezer.  I'm quite type A and freeze them flat then move them to gallon sized ziplock bags, where I can get about 8-10 bags in.

  • Ditto to @carafern‌
No issues with the Medela & I love the adapter to pump straight into the bag.
  • I can't speak towards leaking or towards freezer burn but as far as the Ziploc part of the bag goes I really actually don't like Medela I prefer avent
  • I like the Lansinoh bags. Used them storing milk for a year with DS, using them again this time around.

    I hated the Medela bags.
