Emery

What do you guys think of Emery as a girl's name? DH's middle name is Emerson, so while I'm pretty sure Emory is the way it's supposed to be spelled, Emery would be after her dad, so is it okay to 'mis-spell' a name when it's after somebody?

Why not just use Emerson as the middle name?  Esp if it's after her dad?

OOps--- should have just dittoed @colerose

  • I would keep it for the boys. It's a very masculine name despite the recent feminine usage. Besides, if you plan to use the nn Emmy or Emmie she will be one of several.

A college friend just named her son Emory and I was so happy to see it on a boy!

  • I like it for a boy.
  • My boss and his wife just had a baby boy named Emery. It's NMS personally, but I like it much better on a boy.

  • It's a boys name. I agree with @ColeRose 100%: middle name Emerson or use a feminine variant like Emilia as the fn.
  • It makes me think of an emery board

  • My friend just had a little girl they named Emery. Most people will probably assume boy based on its similarity to Emmet and Emerson, but it can be used either way.

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.

  • I like it for a girl - it's definitely more girl than boy these days, imo
  • That was my great grandfathers name. I knew a baby girl named Emerson. I'm not crazy about it.
  • What about Emily or Emmy?
  • Emery and Emerson are BOY'S names! Case closed!
  • My DD is Emery. She's about to turn 10 and no one has ever expected her to be a boy. It's never been remotely popular as a boy's name. Although, at a kids event the other day she was one of 3 girls with the name.

  • I love Emery for a girl.... especially if you have a feminine MN. I'm not a fan of rose but it sounds well together.

We're doing Jaquelyn for a middle name, it's MIL's name.

If you're already using a really unattractive spelling for the mn, then at least pick a nice (and feminine) fn!
It's not unattractive? It's literally MIL's name exactly how it's spelled.

I've only ever heard Emery on a girl. I've known like 4 Emery/Emory's all girls... I don't see how that name can be either masculine or feminine....
  • It is an unattractive, and made up spelling. Sure, I guess you get a pass since it's a family name. I wouldn't do it, but whatever. At least give her a nice feminine name so she has options.

Emery is a BOY name because history, linguistics, and etymology say it is.

Things change... get over it. Why get so angry? Worried your little boys will get teased for having a girl's name? I don't get it. People on here go overboard with such vehement reactions on here. Why?
Why not just say "It's not my style." Or, "I generally, consider it a male name." Instead, everyone is so aggressive. Is this like a groupthink thing?
  • I like the name on a girl.

I'd say it's a group thing. If it's not done their way they have to tell you... negatively. It's sad. I like the name Emery. Girl or boy. Did you know ASHLEY was originally a boys name? Ment for sons or royalty? Yeah things change and when there is a book that pops out with my kid telling me all the dose and don't about naming him or her... it's my choice 100%. Respect my decision even if it's not your cup of tea. And I'll respect you for not opening your mouth. Sorry people make me mad. No Respect. Also I have a son Payton.... most girls have that name around here... Yet he loves his name. Its about how you raise your children that the learn to love or hate a name. And for Christ sake it can be changed if they really do hate it. But... it does cost. I'm paying for mine. And I was given the simplest of names ever.
  • I think the folks around here are well aware that Ashley and Payton are boys names. You will not receive any arguments about those particular names.

  • I think Emerson as the middle name with an actual girl name would be lovely.

In regards to spelling, I think it's ok to misspell a name if it's a family name but only in the mn spot.
  • No it's never ok to misspell a name.

  • It's not particularly feminine and I think it will be misheard as Emily a lot.  Also, I am not really keen on parents naming children after themselves (unless it's a name that honors other family members, e.g. I'd use my given MN to honor relatives in previous generations with the same name), and I don't see the point in turning acrobatics to do it. I think Emerson as a MN is fine for either sex, but I don't think Emery honors Emerson and I don't like it as a girl name.

  • Totally fine with that, I could care less what a name means, but on many websites it states "in American the meaning of the name Emerson is: Brave; powerful."

  • Thanks all for your input. But it will not change my mind on what I name my child. My husband and I both have names that can be used for a boy or a girl. We love the name and the fact that it fits with our names that can go with either sex. As a teacher I have seen plenty of names that are worse or have horrible spellings. This is what works for us and our family and I am secure enough in my decision to not be swayed by strangers on the internet.
