Food Allergy

Food labels question

My doctor and I feel fairly certain that my 4 week old has mspi, so I am eliminating milk and soy from my diet in order to continue breastfeeding.
I found a list of hidden sources of milk and soy, but I was under the understanding that allergens had to be listed separately on food labels.
Is this true, or do I need to go through each ingredient list on each food?

Re: Food labels question

  • Most will list the allergens but I always double check still though.

  • Double check!!!!!! Always! Also I don't normally shop at walmart for groceries (amost all of the walmart brand items are cross containaminted with soy or dairy) but I need some almond milk the other day and went to grab some Great VAlue brand. Despite saying soy and dairy free on the front of the package under the label there was a cross contamination warning for both soy and dairy.
I also call all companies that list natural flavors in the ingredients and don't forget to check your seasonings, canned veggies, etc. Pretty much if it comes in a package of any kind it needs to be checked
    Hope this helps! Good luck!

  • Unfortunately, we all know that companies can often be quite creative with their labeling... It makes it very difficult for us moms. But, Kellymom has a great printable list of dairy names that would be great to have with while shopping. And I triple check everything. When I buy, when I get it home, and before I eat it. My LO has FPIES and is EBF. I second what Izzies said. Also, check your vitamins/meds. It requires a bit of time to call companies, but it is so worth it. Good for you to keep breast feeding! Not an easy road, but you can do it! Hugs!
