Cold Day/Snow Day--anyone else?

The Chicagoland area is experiencing crazy cold weather today. -25* to -30* with the windchill. SO many schools are closed including my district and even CPS. Can I say I'm pretty pissed off? That'll be an extra unpaid day for me at the end of the school year. Damn the f'ing cold! We better be back in school tomorrow.

So...what should I do today? Shop? Sleep? Eat? Watch TV? Anyone else have a snow day/cold day today? What are your plans?

Re: Cold Day/Snow Day--anyone else?

  • I wish! It's not too cold here, mid 30's, but I work in an entertainment venue and they are getting ready for a large event this weekend, so all the roll up doors are open and the heat is off... So it's in the 50's in my office. I should have just stayed home.
  • Loading the player...
  • It was -50C this weekend here with the windchill and I still had to drag my complaining butt into work :( Right now it's -39C with the windchill and nothing is closed. I don't know why I live here...
  • It's 11 degrees in PA right now but the real feel is -7. Not as bad and I'm pretty sure everyone has school. I feel worse for DH at work. His shop isn't insulated well and his wood stove doesn't like to stay lit overnight.
  • Oh wow!!! It's really cold where y'all are!! It's cold for us in SC at 33...stay warm ladies!!!
  • I wish we got cld and snow. I moved from MA to WA this fall and I miss the New England weather as crazy as it sounds. I always loved the snow.

  • It's -9°F with a wind chill of -31°F... So cold! My hubby and I watched a documentary called Urbanized on Netflix last night. A lot of talk was about slums and I realized that places that have hard winters will never have real problems with slums. That's the only benefit of harsh cold that I can think of right now :( (I'm not ignoring the plight of people living in slums; it was just a thought that dawned on me.)

  • Here in southern Mn and school is delayed even though the big cities are closing. Just close already!
  • It's cold here but tomorrow is supposed to be much worse. I am hoping for a school delay but I am not counting on it.

I think the perfect snow day is spent eating and watching tv.

I don't know about that @lexyraejay. The news was just on Lower Wacker Drive. It's a road in downtown Chicago that is known as a sleeping area for the homeless. It seemed like a lot of people were there. The Salvation Army was there handing out food, coffee, tea, and blankets. Chicago has some terrible winters with that wicked cold wind from the lake. We have a pretty substantial homeless population. It makes me very sad.

  • It is suppose to be -25 here with the windchill tomorrow morning- I'm scheduled for my glucose one hour. Totally debating rescheduling? Anyone want to talk me in to a better decision? My preference is not to go but....

That isn't true. We have harsh winters and many poor/homeless/slum areas around. It is a huge problem for them this time of year. The state opens "warming centers" on days like today to get people inside and safe.

I'm at my 2 hour glucose right now. It's better to just get it over with.

I feel guilty I want to reschedule it even if it's by a day but I agree better to get it over with. My last one made me so yucky feeling though :(
  • That sucks! Don't they build snow days into the calendar?! I've been praying for a cold/snow day here. 6 degrees doesn't qualify. :-S Thank God for my "illegal" space heater!

The snow days are built in for as needed. Example: we will get out of school on June 9 unless no snow days are used. Then it will be June 2. My maternity leave is calculated using no snow days. I have 31 sick days and can use 30 (6 weeks of maternity leave) and be paid for them. If I don't have the sick days I cannot be paid. If I have the baby on time (over spring break), that'll take me up to May 27. Every day after that until the last day is FMLA and unpaid. We won't be starving or anything but it will stink to be short-checked.

Not to laugh--but at 34* in Chicago, some people are just starting to think about putting on pants vs shorts. I didn't bust out my winter jacket until this week!

I'm not too far from you @wolowizard‌. I'm in Augusta and it's barely 30 degrees at the moment. High winds is making it feel a lot colder.
  • -2°F with a wind chill of -26°F or -19 C with a windchill of -32 C at the moment, and supposed to get colder. Why did I move back to Canada from California? I would take a snow storm over this cold temperature any day. My son has his 18 month check-up this afternoon, and I'm dreading having to dress him and myself to get out of the house.

  • It's 5 degrees here in central Illinois! They've canceled schools down this way too because of the windchill! Hubby is working a 24 hour shift and I have the day off! I plan on staying in comfy clothes and getting this house cleaned up and organized before I start a crazy semester next week of class, clinical, and work! Stay warm April mommas!

I live in Burligton, ON (near Toronto)
It's supposed to feel like -30C today.

I'm not sure if the picture is legible, but it says:
"The air hurts my face.....why am I living where the air hurts my face?"
  • I'm in the midwest, and the windchill today is -40F.  Schools are canceled.  Looks like tomorrow isn't going to be much better because there is a blizzard warning out due to high winds and six inches of light snow on the ground from the other day.  I kept DD1 home from daycare today (she does preschool there) because I just don't feel like going out.

While DH and I both grew up close to here we did live for 3 years in south FL.  I'm seriously wondering today why we came back.  Cabin fever is real!

I think you should partake in a little online shopping!
  • I'm also in the Chicago area. My school district is closed and I'm so grateful for it. I'm a physical therapist and I drive between a bunch of schools, so going in and out if my car all day in the freezing cold sounded so miserable.

  • I'm in Southern MD and it's about 25* F here today.  I know it's much colder elsewhere, but I'm freezing!  As far as I know, all schools are open, though many in the northern counties were closed yesterday for snow.  I think they only got 3" but people here lose their minds when the flakes start falling... which I don't get, because it's not like it doesn't happen.

I'm sorry it's an unpaid day for you, but I think I'd spend a snow day with a good book and some cocoa.  In fact, I don't think I'd leave the sofa, but then, I'm lazy like that.

My part of New England is 9° at the moment, with a low of -11° tonight, I'm not sure about the wind chill.
  • It's 12 degrees and snowing here in Colorado. We had 50s day before yesterday, and 40s with sunshine yesterday... our weather changes quick enough to give you whiplash. Supposed to be 50 again tomorrow. I guess the perk is that we thaw out a bit before/after snow storms. I'd be so bummed if I lived somewhere where we were just locked into winter!

Sorry about your unpaid day :( that's no fun. I'd be in pjs watching Supernatural!
  • It's 19* here but feels like 2* with the windchill! We still have school and everything though, but I'm debating ordering in food for lunch just so I don't have to leave work lol. The wind is ridiculous today, gotta love that OK wind! I don't mind the cold, if it's snowing, but otherwise it can kick rocks.

  • We're having a cold day here too.-40* as long as we don't have too many, I'm okay with having it off. I can take up to 8 weeks paid (using sick days) and have 6w+2d of work left from my due date.

I'm spending today watching the bachelor and tutoring.

I'm in sc too. 40 degrees here and I'm freezing. Can't imagine the negative temperatures up north.
  • All of the schools in central mn are closed due to the cold, I wish it would've happened later because I'm sick so I can't really enjoy my day off! I'll be spending my day laying in bed watching supernatural and eating crackers and soup, just like the past couple of days haha
  • It's 22 here today but the wind gusts come with a chill of -15. This is how I found the kitty this morning. I'm super jealous.
  • I'm in the Chicago area too and we're closed as well. I'm taking advantage of the unexpected day off by doing a little shopping & cleaning out closets/sorting through clothes/etc.
  • I wish it was a cold day here! -28 Celsius with the wind chill made for a not fun walk to campus this morning. I would love to stay in for the rest of the day but have work and prenatal classes later so out I go, even though the wind is supposed to pick up later and get even colder. Canada in January...

@karboss @starshollow I can't even imagine how awful that must be for the homeless. I guess I am specifically referring to slums similar to those in Brazil and India in which people build make-shift dwellings, one on top of the other that sprawl on and on. It just seems unlikely to me that those sort of slums would spring up in a climate in which it would be dangerously cold to stay in for a substantial part of the year.

We have harsh cold temperatures and agreed we do not have many "slum" areas in my city but just 2 days ago we had 2 deaths of homeless men on the street- both a direct relation to exposure to the elements- I'd rather have a slum in my city then people literally freeze to death on my sidewalk :(
That is so terrible! I feel so fortunate at times like this to have a roof over my head.

  • Just got the call. No school tomorrow either. The air temp will be higher (today is -1 and tomorrow is supposed to hover around 10) but the wind chill is supposed to make the real feel colder. With my kids being in wheel chairs, diapers, with trachs and feeding tubes--the last thing we need is a broken down bus. I get it but I wish we could make them up before ML.

  • I'm in Alabama. Our schools are delayed two hours tomorrow. The temp is supposed to be around 5 degrees with a wind chill of -4. We aren't used to the cold down here! But of course us teachers still have to show up at 745 for the parents that don't want their kids to come to school on a delay, so yay us. Haha
