Nurses come in :)

I wrote about this awhile ago in one of the threads but almost every night I start to feel kinda crappy. I thought it was reflux and I guess it could be but it doesnt happen during the day. I'm thinking maybe blood sugar? Maybe I should go to the doctor and have my blood drawn just to be sure everything is normal. Opinions?

Re: Nurses come in :)

  • Not a nurse but...

Your local pharmacy probably sells some cheap blood sugar monitors (the ones I've seen cost $10 +$7 test strips and you don't need a prescription unless you want it team through your insurance). You can check your blood sugar on your own if you start feeling crappy to see if it's high or low.

But dh some times feels yucky at night and a stomach acid med (ranitidine works quickly or omeprazole which works slower but better) seems to help.

Some people only get reflux at night (after biggest meal of the day=dinner) or when they lay down. And sometimes that feeling is kind of vague.

  • I've never heard of reflux as a low blood sugar symptom before. Maybe nausea, but usually people with with low BS feel shaky, weak, dizzy, sweaty. If you truly feel like it's low BS you could just try drinking some juice (nothing acidic, which could worsen your reflux) and see if you feel better. Eat frequent, small meals throughout the day with a good mix of complex carbs and protein.

If reflux is your actual issue, avoid greasy/fatty foods, alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, and anything acidic (citrus, tomato products). You can try mylanta, tums, or ranitidine OTC. If those things aren't helpful, you could go to your doctor and get a prescription.

What are your actual symptoms? You mention feelin "kinda crappy" and reflux, is there anything else going on?
  • Low iron/low magnesium (not a nurse, other med professional).
  • I start feeling nausea and some stomach pain. I think its reflux because I eat a tums when I start to feel like this and I feel better for a little bit. I was just throwing blood sugar out there as an option but maybe I should try the medicine @ho11yday‌ DH uses. Ill have to go to the dr to get a prescription, correct? When I feel reflux, I feel a burning in my throat.
  • Thank you for all the help/advice ladies :)

@bridetobe9132013‌ I would try over the counter stuff first. And diet changes. Don't eat too close to laying down. Also, recurring pain like that could be an ulcer.

Eta not a nurse- but years of stomach issues.

I agree with this. Try OTC meds first, if it doesn't help, make an appt to see a doc. And yes, you'll need to see your doctor to get a prescription. Hope you figure out what this is and feel better soon!
  • @ISeeYouRN‌ I think its just mainly at night

You can buy it otc without an rx. But if you want name brand (which is expensive) get an rx so your insurance will pick some of it up. I know Kroger sells a meter and strips for under $20. But it's their house brand.

  • Could be a lot of things. The GI tract is really long and could be a few things. Like PP have said, try OTC meds and if it doesn't help, you may need a colonoscopy and/or EGD to make sure you don't have an ulcer or intestinal condition. I get low blood sugar and that doesn't seem like the symptoms I have.
  • Thanks I will try an otc :)
