Hi there, this is my first post. Baby and I faught brest cancer together and won!!! Cancer free since mid November!! Due June 9th. We are so thankful for our super baby!!! (please don't take offense to that term. There were many days calling him that was my only hope of him being ok with what I was putting him through...) Before the battle we weren't going to continue with the name tradition but since have had a change of heart. My husband is the third and all generations are still living. DH's name is Bert so there isn't really a shortened version of his name. I somtimes call him 'B'. Any nickname suggestions for our LO who will be the fourth? DH said it was always confusing growing up in the same house as his dad with the same name. Some have suggested Dru for quaDRUple. Thankful for suggestions! PS I was only 31 when diagnosed w/ no history of BC in my family. Check your boobs!!!! xo

  • First off, congrats on beating cancer- that's amazing

As for Bert... It's pretty plain and can't really become shortened to a nick name any further. I would not call him Drew because that's an entirely separate name and although it may be cute to give a little baby that nick name, it's not for an adult. I would hate my entire identity to be named after the word quadruple as I'm sure most would. I believe new babies are entitled to their own identities and shouldn't be given someone else's identity but hey. If you're naming him Bert, he's gonna go by Bert. If you want a name that can be shortened to a nick name, name him something else
  • I have a friend who had the same issue. Her son is the 3rd Bert, so they call him LB for little bert.

That really sucks. I hope that stops happening when he's a grown man...

Middle name is Roy. I wish it was an option BUT... While I'm sure there are many wonderful ppl with that name... I'm a teacher and have had a very trying experience with a little one with that name. In my mind it has a pretty permanent negative connotation. I'm okay with it for a middle name but can't bring myself to use it as a first. @padleylynn, thanks! Bert isn't a common name. What a coincidence you know someone with the same issue. Little Bert is what my husband was called growing up. @Janda426, at least they didn't call him BJ for Bert Jr. ;)
  • I think it will last. They live in a very small country town where everyone know each other. So unless he asks to be called something different later in life it will probably be LB.
  • Wow, that is a really tough one. I can't think of a single nickname for Bert. And like others have said, I personally, would not make up a random nickname just to have one. My advice would be to wait and see what he's like. A nickname may come to you as he grows up or one of his siblings/cousins may not be able to pronounce Bert and tada! A cute nickname comes out of that.
As an example, my younger cousins couldn't pronounce my name and ended up calling me "Bosch". It's a family nickname that has stuck with me that I love because it's a fun story and came from those I love. =D
Best of luck and congrats on you and baby beating cancer!

  • Do his initials spell anything that could be a nickname like BRY you could call him "Br-I" or "Cuatro" four in Spanish?

    Wtf?? Are you joking?
  • I don't like the idea of Dru because it makes no sense to use quadruple as a nn source.  Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of naming children after their parent because I think each child should have their own identity.  Can you MN Bert and find a FN you both love?

I know a Jerry who is called Little Jerry at 39 because we have to differentiate somehow between him and his father.  I wouldn't want that.
  • I was also wondering if something like Robert would be an option. That would leave you with a lot more nickname options. Or perhaps a different middle name? Is Bert Roy mandatory or is there some wiggle room there? Tbh I don't see a lot of options with Bert Roy.

This still happens to me at family gatherings and I'm going on 35 years old.  My mom and I have the same name and family still calls me 'Lil D'.  It is infuriating.

I will be honest: I think naming him Dru for quadruple is stupid.  If you want to carry on the tradition, name him Bert.  Or use Bert as a middle name and give him his own first name.

I'm not the biggest fan of naming kids after their fathers and if your DH has already voiced his concerns regarding name confusion, it might be best to find a new name altogether.

My husband's family still calls him "little Johnny" even though he's 32. That shit STICKS.
