Empty looking sac

Hi Ladies

This question is for a friend of mines - more like a sister. She's taken 6 OTC pregnancy test all BFP, she went to the clinic to have the official urinalysis and that came back BFP, but then she was scheduled for an early Ultrasound to determine how far along she is because her menses are abnormal, however when she got there they told her that they couldn't find a heartbeat and in her own words she said "the sac looks empty". They told her it was most likely a MISSED MISCARRIAGE but she hasn't bled at all and she hasn't had any cramping she says. Has anyone here ever heard of a "Missed Miscarriage" and do you think she should get a second opinion since she went to like a resource for pregnancy type place? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

UPDATE: It turned out to be a blighted ovum and she passed the sac yesterday morning. Thank you to all who gave their input.

Re: Empty looking sac

  • If she has abnormal cycles, she could just be way earlier than she thought.  Or it could be a missed M/C.  They are pretty common.  Sometimes it takes awhile for the miscarriage to actually start, sometimes it will require surgery (a D&C) to remove the tissue.  Normally the doctor's office will follow up with additional blood work to see if her #s are increasing and perform another U/S in a week or two to see if there has been any growth.

  • Thank you so much @GnomeSweetGnome. So she is definitely on the right track then because she had blood work done today and they did say that they need to know what her hcg levels are. This is a huge sign of relief to hear. Thank you again.

  • @wickedsugar I never said the comments weren't good, I said some were just Rude. How's the saying go - "If it don't apply, let it fly". Most who took the comments to heart, is because it applied to them. Those who didn't respond, knew that the post wasn't directed towards them.

None the less - thank you. We really appreciate your help.

  • From my personal experience...went in for an early u/s because I had some bleeding and my progesterone levels were very very low. Though my OB set my due date based on my LMP, I was charting and knew I didn't ovulate until the 25th or so day of my cycle. Needless to say, when I went in for my ultrasound at what they believed to be 8 weeks, they only saw a sac. Because they felt the pregnancy might not be viable, they refused to give me progesterone until they knew for sure. They scheduled me for a follow up. That was an awful week. When we went back, we had a baby and a heart beat :) I've switched doctors since having my little dude, and my new Dr said this is exactly why they don't do early ultrasounds. So this isn't to say that things will be the same for your sister, but there is hope. Ill kep my fingers ctossed for the best for her.

  • Thankyou @Ashleighann . That is right on the money with what they are doing and saying with her as well. Take care and thank you again.
