Mspi

i am fairly certain my 4 week old has MSPI and am eliminating milk and soy products to make sure.
If I just look at the allergy warnings on labels, will I be ok? Or do I need to read every ingredient to be sure?

Thanks for all the help, ladies! We've had a rough couple of weeks with little man and you all have been super helpful with all of my questions.

Re: Mspi

  • When it comes to food allergies, the 6 main food allergies are listed in bold at the end of the ingredients.  Milk and soy are two of those (along with peanut, tree nut, egg, and wheat).  It really makes it user friendly!  Be aware that "whey" is actually a milk product too, but they should still have the bolded milk at the end.  GL!  Stick with it....things will get so much easier in just a short amount of time.

  • Just wanted to add that soybean oil and soy lecithin aren't usually listed as an allergen in the bolded area. Some mspi are unable to tolerate these even though they are "protein free" :-) so if you still have issues after the elimination period it is something to consider. Good luck. We've bee dairy/soy free for 8 months and it does get easier with time!

  • Good to know, thanks!
About how long did your elimination periods take before you saw improvement?
It's killing me to see my sweet little man so uncomfortable, especially knowing it's because of my milk!

There are some other ingredients that can be derived from milk or soy that extremely sensitive babies might react to, that wouldn't be listed as an allergen: natural flavors, Vitamin E, caramel color, guar gum, and many more. Here's a couple of lists I like for potential hidden dairy and soy ingredients.
