Success after IF

Walking, Falling and Eyesight

LO stood and was grabbing on to things at 4 months because of her awful reflux, she walked at 9 mos but then stopped walking at 11 months after an accident at the gastro office. Then she started walking alone again 2 months ago. This week she has been falling a lot like 20-30x a day, its almost as if she doesnt see whats on the floor in front of her. She used to cross over high thresholds carefully and now its like she doesn't even see them and falls over them. She has crashed into the chairs, table and couches several times tonight. Has this happened to anyone? Do you think I need to call the pedi for an eye exam?

  • Was she bumping into stuff when she reverted to crawling?

  • Have you asked your pedi? Some kids are just more clumsy. DD1 walked later and when she did she fell a lot. She's 3 1/2 now and she still falls a lot. The baby started walking at 9 mos and she never falls. I think some kids are just better coordinated. But it doesn't hurt to ask the pedi.

  • A started walking at 13 months and did pretty well. She would, and occasionally still does, have clumsy days where she trips and falls over nothing! Sometimes it's her own feet, but sometimes it's literally nothing... We never worried because it wasn't a continuous issue. If your LO is staying clumsy I would definitely ask your ped for input and an eye exam. Hopefully it's nothing!

  • Do you or hubby have vision problems? Or any family members. My eye doctor suggested an eye exam at 2 years old cuz hubby and I both wear glasses. I totally suggest an eye exam, it won't hurt and it could potentially help.

Alternatively, my nephew had an early eye exam and was told he potentially had an issue but it might correct itself and then my sister waited. He has quite bad vision and has been wearing glasses since 3. But the problem is it's hard to tell sometimes with young kids.

  • DH's family has a very significant history of strabismus/amblyopia, so the boys are being followed by a pedi opthalmologist. One of my boys was extraordinarily clumsy until around 2. I kept asking he docs about it, as he was constantly covered in bruises and in and out of the ER several times. They told me it was most likely his age and build (95% for head and 5-10% height/weight- he's basically a stick figure), but said it could be indicative of a problem; just not in his case. I'd bring it up, but there's a good chance it isn't anything concerning.
