@Robeano -- More c-section BFing questions

Thanks for your good advice! I'm very curious because our first time as less than ideal. I had a failed induction and an emergency c-section at 9:30pm. We got to our room on the PP floor at about 2am. I was so out of it, I couldn't even hold her. So, our first real attempt at BFing wasn't until around 6:30 a.m. We didn't supplement, thought she was doing fine. She was discharged with no comment about her weight. 48 hours we were back in the hospital because she had lost so much weight.

So, we are planning this time with the scheduled c-section to start nursing as soon as I can, but we are also planning to supplement until we know he's getting enough from me. Supply was an issue for the 13 months I pumped for her. Took all of the supplements and Reglan, ate oatmeal, you name it. What are your thoughts on supplementing from the start? So, I would nurse but also supplement at each feed until we know his weight is trending in the right direction. Thanks for any advice you can give. Really hoping to get off to a better start this time, which I know we will. No laboring for 57 hours before this csection. Lol. That ought to help.

Re: @Robeano -- More c-section BFing questions

  • Honestly, I would hold off for a day or two with supplementing. But have him checked everyday to see how his weight gain is. If you're worried about supply it's better to pump for about 10-20 minutes after every nurse, and if you need to supplement, give that instead. That way it is teaching your body to produce enough milk.

    I would wake up in the middle of the night to pump for DD to get enough to supplement her in the evening the next day. I did that for 3 months before DD just started to refuse the bottle and I just went fully breastfeeding.

    You could also have a lactation consultant come see you in the hospital (if they have one on staff) or book an appointment for immediately following release.

    Also, I've been told RCS have a much better recovery than emergency. You'll likely be able to nurse pretty shortly afterwards.

    Do you have PCOS? Cause it has a chance of low supply.

    From other mom's I've talked to who had low supply with their first, second one was fine. (That's what I'm banking on!)

    Thanks! Yes, we worked with our hospital LC who was terrible. After going home, we met with LCs three times and really tried to get all the support we could. I was all over Kelly Mom like a wet blanket. Lol. No PCOS; my diagnosis was DOR.

    Just nervous this time. We did all of the weight checks at the hospital last time and nothing seemed amiss. No one saw a problem or if they did, no one told us. Just don't want to see that happen again. Thanks for your advice on supplementing. Much appreciated. I have a Medela Symphony which I'll bring to the hospital in case I need it.
