LO goes to an in-home sitter and she has been on vacation for the last 2 weeks.  Friday night I received a phone call from her husband that her oldest (29 years) son had passed away.  I don't know anything about him as far as background or if he had been sick.  She is obviously not working this week, so Alex is going to a daycare.  We had been considering switching him to daycare to get more educational type involvement, so now seems to be the time.  

Now to my actual question, would you send a flower arrangement, take food over, etc?  WWF14D?

I think it depends on how well you know her and what her situation is. Do they have a lot of family and friends who will be bringing food ect.

When my dad passed we had so much food that we threw a ton away because although everyone thinks casserole... some people's appetite zero out.

Maybe ask her? Perhaps a small donation to the expenses would be helpful with a condolences card?

The funeral home sold photo cds for $10 and that helped without expenses for the funeral since almost everyone bought one.

Rather than bring food, maybe a gift card to a restaurant? Like Moxy said, lots of people bring food at first, and this will help after everything settles down. I'd also send flowers...I like the idea of sending live rather than cut.

Thank you all for the suggestions.  I'm going to order a plant and probably drop off a card with a giftcard for pizza(?).

Gift cards are great. They can be used months after all the other food is gone on a hard day when they don't feel lie cooking. We really appreciated them after Nathaniel died and still have some left almost a year later.

I think a plant is a good idea in theory but I know when my dad died our house looked like a jungle. Everyone sent a plant and my mom had to deal with all of them in addition to everything else going on. I like the gift card idea if you feel the need to get them something other than just a card.

i like the idea of a card and gift card for food at a later date. And i think flowers are a nice sentiment but i too think they're a lot to take care of when one has a lot on their mind already.
