Toddler Bed

Has anyone made the transition to a toddler bed with a child that was perfectly happy in their crib?

Ds bounces when he wakes up. He has punctured a mattress and broke two springs. Which, we replaced, and I noticed they are broken again. I worry if he is safe in the crib. But, I am scared to move him, because he sleeps so well, (unlike his sister).

I am afraid he sleeps so well because he likes the confinement of the crib.

Re: Toddler Bed

  • I tried... and it didn't work.  E freaked out. So he's back in the crib.  But I know a lot of people have great success transitioning their LO's out of cribs! I'm not sure what it is about my kiddos that makes them cage babies, lol.

Does your crib transition into a toddler bed? Could you try pulling that side off before moving him out of the crib entirely? I'm glad I did that trial before spending money on a toddler bed.

  • We did it and it was easier than I thought. The first night I think he was a little concerned with the change, but once he fell a sleep, he was good. After that, it was smooth sailing.

  • My parents just bought him a Thomad toddler bed so we will be trying soon. We attempted taking the side off the crib about a month and a half ago but he was having none of that. I think we might be close to ready, and having a fun bed might help him want to stay in it.

Mac is an awful sleeper to begin with so I think that will make the transition harder. I would love to have him in a bed before baby gets here because I fear him trying to climb into baby brother/sisters crib thinking its for him too. We're going to make his Thomas bed extra special with Thomas sheets and comforter which will hopefully help him want to sleep in it. When my parents watched him last weekend, they said he knew when it was naptime and climbed into our bed and fell asleep there, I'm hoping he does the same with his since he'll be able to get into it alone.

  • @wineandcake‌ , my dd is a horrible sleeper, but she transitiones great. She slept better in the toddler bed than she ever did in the crib.
  • We just took the side off of E's crib last week. E was perfectly content in there, but we need the crib for the baby due in the spring. I was afraid of no sleep for the first little bit, but he didn't get out. In fact in the morning when he woke up he yelled and was standing in it like he did when the side was on. Last night was the first night we had to put him back. He came out after 20 minutes and said "I wake up!!!" But went right to sleep when we put him back.
  • From the mom's I've talked to it seems like kids who sleep well in their crib don't do as well with the transition. I've heard a couple stories of previously awesome sleepers who are now co-sleeping (with unwilling parents). It's come up a lot recently in my mom's group because most of our kids are about the same age. I have no personal experience so take what I say with a grain of salt. They've scared me enough that LJ will probably be in his crib until he's 5.

Dd gets in our bed at least 6 days a week. When it happens around 5:30, I love it, she is snuggly. But lately, it happens a lot earlier. She is a bed hog. And on top of that, it has been happening while I am still awake. she comes in, I am not completely convinced she is awake, and if you try and put her back to bed, she screams.

I would not mind some snuggly morning time with ds, but I can't have someone else in my bed all night. At the same time, I refuse to buy a new crib. I have been thinking I may stack some books under the broken part of the crib.
  • Yeah, that really sucks about the crib mattress. Hopefully everything works out.

  • We're holding off as long as humanly possible. Can you maybe try a foam type mattress, like from IKEA?
