I have a mild case of mastitis and I called my doctor and she said if I go on antibiotics I will have to pump and dump since I'm allergic to penicillin. My lc said there are antibiotics that I can still take that are save for lo. Anyone else allergic to penicillin and able to take something for mastitis?

virtually all oral antibiotics are safe while breastfeeding. some quick googling shows that erithromycin or clindamycin can be prescribed for mastitis in women who are allergic to penicillin.

you can double-check drug safety at LactMed and InfantRisk (or call InfantRisk's hotline). or ask your LC.

Which I under stand better to be safe than sorry. I do have a freezer stash of 100 ounces or so. But with her only being 8 weeks I really don't want to get into it yet.

That is ridiculous. Babies get prescribed antibiotics all the time. I recently had mastitis and am allergic to amoxicillin. I was prescribed clindamycin and nursed through it. Clindamycin is what they give you in the hospital if you are strep b positive when you are in labor so of course it is safe for baby. No need to waste milk.

My MW told that the best abx to start with for Mastitis is Doxycycline and then Keflex (can't remember the official name of that one). I had to get an abscess drained and after they saw what strain it was I got switched to Clindamyacine. All of these are safe for BFing so that's why I'm surprised they even mentioned your allergy to PCN because I don't think that is the abx that is best to start with?

Thanks everyone! I spoke to my ob again and she has prescribed me clindamycin. She also said it was safe for me to continue nursing. I'm so glad I talked to the LC and you guys instead of wasting all my milk!
