i did a search and didn't see anything on this -- has anyone else been diagnosed with marginal cord insertion? i had my A/S on friday and it went well except for the fact that the cord isn't attached to the center of the placenta like it should be but is off to the side. the radiologist didn't seem too concerned. i have my follow-up with my doctor on thursday. luckily baby's growth is right on track but it looks like i may have to go in for more frequent ultrasounds to monitor the situation.
I'm in the same boat. I'm a FTM so I have no idea what to expect other than they said I have to go in for 3 more ultrasounds over the course of my pregnancy and if baby is measuring in the 10th percentile I'll be induced at 37 weeks. They didn't seem concerned and said it's all very theoretical and we will just keep an eye on it.

I have the same issue as well. Cord is at the edge. I found out at my 20 week scan last week. I have to follow up with the doctor and ask a ton of questions. My head is spinning and I'm trying to not catastrophize:
My best friend had this with her son last year. The biggest concern is baby may not get all the nutrients they need and thts why you get extra ultrasounds, to check growth. BFF had to eat an extra 800 calories a day and ended up delivering a week before her due date.
1st BFP- March 2011. Natural MC @ 8 weeks
2nd BFP- July 2011. Chemical Pregnancy
3rd BFP- Sep 2011. My beautiful son was born May 2012. 4th BFP-August 2014- Due May 12, 2015
I have this as well. I talked to my OB about this and she didn't seem concerned. I have to get a growth ultrasound at 32 weeks just in case though . I'm trying to stay positive!!
We have velamentous cord insertion (the cord is attached off center and not covered by the protective jelly) and found out at our A/S last week. It is pretty similar to what you have, except my cord runs over the placenta and out of the jelly. Our maternal fetal specialist doctor told us that they used to believe that this was related to poor growth, however that is very rare and most doctors are moving away from this diagnosis. However, they will do some extra monitoring just in case but most of the time everything keeps going on track just fine.
From what my doctor said, they really worry is if you have this coupled with a low lying placenta near your cervix or vasa previa. She told me not to be concerned and they will just make sure growth is on track but that this should not cause any issues. Just stay positive and know they are checking you to make sure everything is okay. Worst case scenario, you will be induced early but baby should be just fine.
Obviously I am not a medical professional but I am just sharing what I was told. I plan to follow up with my regular OB about it just to find out all the information I can but I am not stressing over it.
I just got off the phone with my Dr who is so attentive and echoed all of the information you gave. "Normal variance" is what he added. So relieved and enjoying feeling baby kicks while I have my lunch hopefully we will all have healthy babies in May!
I was also given this diagnosis at my 20 week US. Like everyone else, my doctor didn't seem too concerned, and said I will just need additional monitoring for growth in the 3rd trimester. She did also say that sometimes it can increase the risk of fetal distress during labor, so they monitor it closely.
I wonder if there's a higher incidence of C section?
my doctor got my A/S results last night and called me. he said that in 90% of cases it has no impact whatsoever. just have to get those monthly ultrasounds for now.
I am 20w3d pregnant with fraternal twins. One of my twins has this, and it was discovered at our 13w NT scan. I was told the same-it could mean slower/lower growth/development, but likely not to be an issue. At my anatomy scan, this twin was 1 oz bigger than his brother. The MFM said the cord issue is something we can very likely cross off our list. With twins, I am going to be getting more ultrasounds anyway, and they'd just be keeping an eye on him. It was scary, but I was happy to hear he's doing well.
@Curlygirl84 I have another ultrasound next week (32). At my 28 wk ultrasound the said baby looked good, maybe 40th percentile. But I'm wondering if she slowed down in her growth since I have only gained 15 lbs so far. I guess I'll know more soon. I've been trying to up my caloric intake to make sure she is getting enough nourishment.

My 28wk growth scan showed baby to be 2lb 10oz. The cord is inserted into the placenta right at the edge. I have another scan on the 25th (week 32). I seem to be gaining steadily and within expected range. I don't know what percentile her growth is, but she has strong regular movements throughout the day.
