I think this is disgusting, I saw a woman say "shit" in front of her young child at the store the other day! They are picking up words at this age. Blah.
I agree. So? Could've been a slip-up. Could have been a really bad day. Could have been a million and one things you know nothing about it. Unless she was going off on the kid, or you know this woman (which clearly you don't) and have some info you haven't provided, this is judgement on overdrive.
I think its important to say only what you are comfortable with your kids learning how to say and repeat. If for some parents that is swear words than so be it. I personally will try my best not to do it but each parent is different and we cant control the rest of the world.
Maybe that was a bit harsh of me, I just felt like it was irresponsible
quote fail!
In what way is it irresponsible? Do you think my children are irrevocably harmed by my saying "oh shit" if I drop something? I really don't think so. There are a lot of words that are not considered "swear words" that are much more harmful.
Yes I do think it is irresponsible and you don't know what kind of harm you are causing by being careless with your words
I'd rather my kids have a foul mouth than the judgey pants you seem to wear so well.
I'll tell you what harm it causes. Absolutely fucking zero. Also, I'm not careless with my words. I say shit and ass and whatnot in front of my kids because I don't think it's a big deal. I never say things that are hurtful or prejudice because those are things that could actually cause harm.
Not to sound judgey, but what are you going to do when your kids become school aged? I work at a jr high and I'm constantly learning new "bad" words from kids who are 11-12 years old.

I genuinely do not understand what you're asking. What will I do when my children get to school and hear other kids use bad words? Or you think my kids are going to be teaching others bad words because I have no problem saying shit in front of them?
Because I can remember being in 5th grade and every kid knew "bad" words.
My parents rarely swear (actually Mom doesn't at all), but that didn't stop my sisters and i from picking those words up from other kids in school. We got whooped good for using them when we got home. I plan to let my daughter know they exist, but that they are adult only words.

I think she's saying that the person who thinks swearing in front of kids is horrible is fighting a losing battle because they'll learn swear words from other kids anyway?
That's what I got from the comment too.
I meant your kids can't live in a bubble. Once they start school, even preschool they are going to be exposed to "bad words". I think as parents it's our jobs to teach our kids that some words are for adults, or there are certain times and places you can use that sort of language. My DD freaks if I say stupid, butt, or hate (because she was taught in preschool that those were ba and mean words) but if I say shit or damnit it doesn't phase her in the least.

I used to swear a lot more than I do now, but I do still swear. Sometimes in front of my kids. I taught my almost 2 year old f*ck the other day, yay me, I hit my head on something instead of hitting hers so I yelled it out. Oh well. My older kids know the bad words. They have even said them before! Oh no. They know that you can't say them at school. They don't say them at school. My 5 yo got in "trouble" for saying bum too many times one day at school I can only imagine how terrified she is to say sh*t or f*ck at school. They are just words. Part of our life. Like boobs.
