Babies: 3 - 6 Months

awakens every hour!!!

LO is 4 mos. old. We get a few good nights here an there where we may go in a couple of times and pop her binky back in and she's fine. Now we are having some nights where every hour (sometimes more than once an hour) she is making noises. If you pop the binky in she is good for a bit. Its difficult to know why this is starting now and we can't let her fuss too long or it disrupts our 3 yr old. Any ideas of why this might be happening now?

  • I'm hoping it's just the 4-month wakeful (since our twins have some of those nights, too).  Until recently, we used to get a 4-5 hour stretch at the beginning of the night, but then it went to crap.  Are you putting LO down "drowsy and awake" or are you rocking to sleep?

We tended to rock to sleep which may have caused them to fully awake between sleep cycles and not know how to put themselves back to sleep.  We've been working on "drowsy and awake" for the past few days.  It's hell getting them down, with lots of crying and pick up/put down, but they seem to be napping and sleeping a little better each day.  Last night was the best so far, they slept 7:30-12, had a feeding and back to sleep  until 3 for another feeding, slept some more and then woke up for a few minutes at 4:30 until their normal wake-up time at 6.  I'm hopeful that things continue to improve.

  • Have you tried a Wubbanub?  It has the Soothie pacifier built in and I would guess that at your LO's age, she should be able to get that binky back in her mouth if it's attached to the Wub.

  • Definitely the norm for a 4 month old. Mine was a disaster for 4 weeks and is slowly starting to sleep much better again. You just never know with babies, you gotta roll with it.

  • Try Sleepy Wings. It's like a swaddle jacket with two pacifier holders. It may work for your baby. But it takes some getting used to.image

Babies change all the time and sleep never stays the same for long so you just have to roll with it.

    Exactly. Ride it out.

  • Sounds like the 4 month wakeful with sleep associations to her paci, as in she is waking up more now due to the way her brain is processing sleep and when she wakes and doesn't have the paci in her mouth like when she feel asleep she wakes up more to have it put back in.  I rode this out with mine for a while then started having her sleep without the paci so that we could break that sleep association.  It is a tough time and lots of us go through it apparently.  Other I read have tried the wub a nub, another paci type holder or sprinkling multiple pacis in crib.
