Nipple Guards

Hey ladies,
So while I wait for my milk to come in i'm still trying to nurse and pump, one of the LC's that i spoke with suggested I use a nipple guard because of the shape of my nipples. I cannot get them to stay on, I have no idea how, should I wet it or something?

Re: Nipple Guards

  • I would wet mine and then turn the nipple portion inside out to fit it around my own nipple. Does that make sense? I feel like I'm not explaining it well. Good luck!!!

  • Are you meaning a nipple shield that the LO nurses with? If so you just have to hold it till the baby latches. They are a pain in the butt. Keep trying to get the baby to nurse without it. I had to use one till my LO magically started nursing at 6 months without it. Kinda just clicked one day. As a premie it took her that long to be big enough and strong enough to nurse without. Her session length dropped once she nursed without because she was more efficient.
  • the medela nipple guards are great and no need to wet them...they just sort of stick on its own.
  • I have to use a nipple shield bc my nipples are what they are. That being said i use a medela one. You can wet it and turn it inside out to create suction like pp mentioned. Also if you use lanolin that helps it stay too (the lc i saw in the hospital suggested that bc its safe for baby and doesnt need to be taken off before nursing). Good luck!

  • I tried it, it worked until she knocked it off. Were still working on positioning and latching so its a bit of a struggle regardless.

Thanks everyone for the suggetions :)
  • have you tried side- lying position?  i find i can better control her position and keep a hand on the shield until she latches well.
