Ladies that track their BBT

I am sure this has been asked like 785 times on here and some of you read this title are rolled your eyes at me haha, but I was just wondering if any of you could give me some tips/advice with temping. Unfortunately I believe tomorrow to be CD1 * throws mini tantrum in the corner and comes back* and I have pretty much tracked anything and everything except my temp.

Do you all use a BBT or does a regular digital work fine for you? I went to walgreens today and couldn't find a BBT. Should I try other places?

Also, when is the best time in the morning to temp? Is it as soon as you get up?

Re: Ladies that track their BBT

  • I think you can still see a temp shift with a regular temp, but I prefer the BBT. I found mine at CVS.

  • I think the bbt goes to an extra decimal spot (xx.xx vs. xx.x). I found mine at target. Yes, temp as soon as you wake up and try not to have more than an hour variation on that. I think, still new to temping here.

  • Do you have a fertility friend account? FF has lots of good info and tutorials on how to chart. If you put a link in your Siggy we can help interpreting if you're having issues.

  • You want to use a BBT and make sure you get one that goes to the hundredths not just the tenths. Walmart should have the Mabis in stock. It's quick, accurate, and beeps when it is done (some beep throughout the time they take your temp).

You take your temperature right when you wake up. Do not move or do anything else but grab your thermometer.

I would suggest checking out the tutorials on FF and with getting a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility - it is the temping bible.

  • I bought mine off of amazon- it shipped free in two days with prime which is a great option if you're having trouble finding it in store! I got the nexus brand, which is pretty decent (I'm officially starting tomorrow but have had a few test runs.) the only complaint I have is that is does beep throughout. Probably going to get on my nerves first thing in the am, but hey... It's for a greater good! Good luck from one new BBT'er to another.

  • I just got the mabis one that is linked in the newbie blog. I ordered it friday night at 8 pm and it arrived SUNDAY morning..I was so shocked..but I love it so far..it only beeps once it's finished and its wayyy quicker than my normal walmart thermometer!!

First, i agree with PP on the BBT, i use one. It's fine. You will be able to easily find one on Amazon or Target.  They all kinda suck a little bit, but usually work ok for the purpose.

As for what time, I have tried a couple of ways and now I find that the best way for me to do it regularly at the same time is to set an alarm for WAY before I need to get up.

My temp alarm is set for 6:30am, but I don't get up until 8 usually.  I wake up, stay in bed and take my temp and then go back to sleep.  Mine isn't back lit (annoying!) so I just leave it (don't touch it because mine only remembers the temp once.  If you try to push the button a second time to see it, it's gone).  I wait to read it from the memory when I actually get up (or later in the day).

My other tip, if you get a thermometer that beeps throughout, is to take some medical tape and a cotton ball and tape over the speaker.  Mine is super loud, and this makes it way better for 6:30am :-)
  • I use a digital.   You're supposed to take your temp as soon as you wake up.
  • You guys rock, thanks! I do have a ff account so I'll def use it for tracking. I thought tomorrow would be cd1, false alarm so I have time to go search for a bbt tomorrow.

  • I agree with using a BBT instead of just a digi. Walgreens should have them with the OPKs and HPTs, not with the regular thermometers.  I have used the Nexus one that is backlit, but mine also went to xx.x, so I got the Target brand one that goes to xx.xx.  It's OK.  I'm thinking of getting the Mabis one that everyone recommends because the Target one seems to take forever to take a reading.

I also recommend checking out the tutorials on FF.  They are a great resource and it helps the rest of us to stalk you.  ;)
