Appropriate pet names?

i hope not to offend anyone posting this I just don't think what my dh called our daughter today was an acceptable pet name. He called her a "Porch Monkey". She is 5 months old. We live in the south (we are white) and that is not a nice name to call anyone. I told him that was not a nice name and it was a degrading word for anyone and he said he would call her that if he wanted because his father called them that. If your dh called your child this would you be mortified like I am? My in laws also think it's ok to call their other grandkids dummy. I don't believe in calling any child names like this. I am a teacher. If I called your kid this at school or they called another student this at school it would not be permitted and I'm sure you wouldn't like it if someone else called your child this name. So what is the difference in your hd or family member calling your child this?

Ok come to find out my FIL used to call my hs and his other kids this.

His your husband African American? My hubby is black so if he called our daughter that I wouldn't mind that much considering its not a name that she will carry with her as her Nick name for a few years. Being that my dd is only 6 months it wouldn't phase me. However I personally am not easily offended.

No he is not and my daughter is 5 months but I don't think it's acceptable to call anyone a degrading name baby or adult. I'm not easily offended I just think it's not an appropriate name for a baby.

I'm from the South and have never heard that phrase. I can infer why it might be offensive, but honestly, I wouldn't find it so if it were my significant other using it for our child. Plenty of people call their kids monkeys. Does the extra descriptive word take it from ok to use to degrading, or is it just a silly name?

Butting in--- but where I am from ( Northern state) that is a HIGHLY offensive phrase.  It is used in a racist context.  I would NEVER allow my husband to call anyone that.

It's a very offensive phrase here in the south too but apparently my husbands family used it as a term of endearment which I have no clue why. They called them that and I found out tonight tricycle motor (which I have no clue where that comes from) and ankle bitter. The last two are just stupid but the one that appalled me is the first name. We had another argument about it tonight. Him saying I'm overreacting about the name.

Thank you Chickaboo1974 and Idani. I have tried to explain that even though my he's parents used that term it is not one we are going to use and my HD just thinks I'm overreacting about it.

I have only heard that term used as a racial slur and would never allowed that phrase in my house.

There are plenty of other nicknames to chose from. Tell your H to pick another one. Because one day he will call your LO that in front of someone who is offended by the term and he will have a real problem.

FWIW, indirect racism is just as bad as direct racism.
