Refusing bottle - cold turkey?

i have been nursing and bottle feeding pumped milk for my Almost 3 month old boys since they were born. Due to supply issues I have been mostly pumping,
Nursing maybe once or twice a day. One of them is a better at nursing and he has been my go to for clogged ducts as I get one every day.

Since about a week ago, he had been crying during bottle feeds. He used to take 3 oz easily, usually 4 but would stop at 1 and start crying. I realized that he is refusing the bottle and wants to nurse. I've read up on this and most advices are to go cold turkey. Since I am going back to work in a month, it seems to be the right decision but I am so sad to be quit nursing at less than 3 months.

Have any of you had success with a baby refusing the bottle and going back to doing both again? Would I be able to nurse again with him not refusing the bottle? I need some encouragement, we worked so hard to get them to nurse, my heart aches to see him cry for me :(

Re: Refusing bottle - cold turkey?

  • This happened to me. I had to go back to work pretty early on (2 wks out from birth) so LO got 2 bottles a day. I did take the month of dec off and he didn't get many bottles we started the bottle back about 2 wks ago and it was ROUGH. My DH gave him the bottle at the same time everyday (2pm bc that's when he will get a bottle when I go back to work). At first he didn't take all of the bottle but we would let him eat what he would take and then I wouldn't feed him again until his next feeding from the breast. It took a few days but he eventually relearned the bottle and is doing better now.

  • My little one refused the bottle after I was home in the summer for 10 weeks at 11 months old. I am a teacher. While she fought it for a few days she finally took to it again after cluster feeding for a couple of days. No need to stop nursing.

She easily goes back and forth. She did this at 3 months( winter break) and 6 months (spring break) too. Usually only a couple of days. They eventually figure it out.
