Due to my culture/family/beliefs we don't name babies until they are born or a family member does this (please tell us more below if this is you)

Actually we could use some input, see below

  • We have a few names picked out and will finalize after baby is born. My husband doesn't believe in picking a name until we see her. I already know what name we will likely go with and sometimes I call her that, but its not set in stone and we don't generally share it with family/friends.

  • We've had the first name for practically forever.  Just settled on a middle name a couple days ago.  :)

In British Columbia, you have 30 days from birth to name your child before the province assigns the baby a number by default.  You get sent home with the paperwork, and have to fill out all the legal shizz online on the Vital Statistics website.

Also, how cool are the commemerative birth certificates we can get here:
    https://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/commemorate/index.html

Each of our kids has one... we just have to decide which one to go with this time around. :)

    Those are so pretty!
  • We have a short list, but I am stumped. I'm almost tempted to drop by the baby name board, but then I guess I don't really care what the opinion of strangers is in the end. ;) All of our kids have names from the Bible. The last several kids have had more unusual names (a couple don't even make the top 1,000 on the social security name site), but two of our kids have "popular" names and several have names that are in the top 200. So, I have two names on our list that I really like. One doesn't make the top 1,000 (but doesn't seem that unusual--Susanna) and the other is in the top 10 (Abigail). I love Abigail...I just wish it weren't so crazy popular. A couple of my older kids prefer Susanna. Hmmm. My husband prefers to see the baby first. So since we're so close, I guess we'll be discussing it at the hospital and possibly even sending the registrar away.

  • We had names picked out before we knew the sex, but nothing monogrammed.
  • We are team green and have a couple boy names and a couple girl names picked out.
  • There are a lot of monogrammers up in here. If you're having a girl check out Princess Linens (frequently on zulily), we got the sweetest dresses for DD there.

We did, too, with DS#2. As soon as he was born, both my DH and I looked at each other and KNEW immediately that name wasn't right for him, and we ended up going with our back up name! DS#1 got the name we planned... We are firmly in the camp of not sharing names until the baby is born. We don't want to hear it if people don't like our choices.

I love the names you both listed!! They're unique but not weird, and most importantly- I knew how to pronounce them! :)

    Edit:spelling is hard.

  • We have it narrowed down to 2 choices:
    Hannah Rose
    Hailey Rose
We won't actually name her till she's born (just till we see her face to face), and we haven't shared our choices with anyone.

    Stuck in the box

Thats us to a T. we are 95% sure of the name, but won't fully comit till he is born and won't be telling anyone.
  • I don't believe in picking my child's name before birth and luckily neither does my husband. It's not because of religion or tradition, I just can't imagine myself naming someone without looking into their eyes first, and getting to know them a bit.

I'm looking for input. This is a little bit of a XP from the Baby Names board.

Should LO be a girl, one of the names we're considering is Lilith.

Depending on whom one asks, there can be a negative religious association with the name. As secular people (I'm agnostic, DH is an atheist,) with a little known folklore, we're not overly concerned about the meaning. As the origin isn't well known, and the unlikelihood that peers would look up the name, I don't worry about teasing.
FWIW, my name is Christine "believer in Christ" and it certainly doesn't represent my beliefs, but it also doesn't bother me because it's a beautiful name my parents chose for me because they liked the name itself.

Since we have a bunch of smart, well-read ladies here, I'm curious how many are familiar with the name's meaning and/or origin. Without Google! Of course, feel free to Google it; but my desire is to know if the origin is as obscure as I believe. Thanks!

  • @crispywheats‌ I don't have any idea of the meaning. I'm with @chicagojackie‌ on the Lillith Fair connotation :)

  • This is our third girl and no names have really stuck out to us.
Our list includes: Jennifer, Emily, Willa, Samantha, Stephanie.
  • Right, I think it was chosen for the Lilith Fair because the more positive spin on the religious origin is that Lilith was a strong, independent lady. Not the reason we'd choose it, but an added bonus.

  • Ok, I'll ask for general input.

We're having a boy and I really love the name Benjamin. My husband likes it, but it's his brother's middle name and he thinks It's weird and we can't use it unless we say he's named after his brother. I totally disagree and think if we both like it, we should just go with it. Who is right - him or me?

  • @crispywheats Lilith was the first woman created according to some Hebrew traditions, created as an equal next to Adam instead of *from* him as a 'lesser' like Eve was. She ended up rebelling against Adam and God. Which is why the name was chosen for the feminist Lilith Fair. :)

I think certain people will know the origin, but not most. I only know because I'm really interested in mythology and folklore, along with historical demons and such (Lilith was said to become the mother of quite a lot of demons, from what I recall).

Personally I love the name and the strong feminist ties it has.

  • @yesiknowwhatcausesthat‌ My name is Abigail and my mother's is Susanna! I love both names. Only thing I'd say, and this may not be as relevant to a child born in 2015, but: people are always calling my mom Sue without her inviting them to do so. And she's not a fan of that. And while Abby (my chosen nickname) gets misspelled here and there, Susanna seems to get misspelled very often (Susana, Suzanna, Susannah, etc.).

@crispywheats‌ My recollection with no googling is that Lilith was Adam's first wife before Eve and that something terrible happened? Or she was super rebellious?

Yes, all of this. I didn't want to start off with the folklore origin because I think that approach immediately turned people off of the name on the BN board.

Eta: We just think the name is pretty and had no idea about the folklore prior to considering it.

I'm with you, but I understand the struggle. MH is the same way. He's anti-naming after someone. (Even if that's not the intention.)
Eventually, I got frustrated and pointed out that chances are one of us will know someone by any name we choose and if we love a name, we should choose it for that reason.

  • Name picked, no monograms, but if I take a look at her and she doesn't seem like a Caroline, I reserve the right to change it. DH went against what we originally discussed and started sharing the name with others, when we were going to wait until she was born. He's too excited. I can't blame him.

This exactly except ours is a boy.
  • We had a name for a very long time, but then flipped last month to something else. The name we switched to had been an early contender and suddenly just seemed right.
