Cluster feeding? (Xp on BF too)

My twin girls are 15 days new . We are tandem nursing both and up until today, supplementing w/ bottle after each feeding.

Both are above birth weight - so I've decided to remove bottle feeds during day and transition to just nursing.

My question is - I've had them both on same schedule from day 1 & intend to keep that way.... So how do I handle cluster feeding?? Or I don't??

Re: Cluster feeding? (Xp on BF too)

  • I generally try to keep my boys on the same schedule too but as they have gotten older their feeding patterns have changed. George eats less frequently than John so there are times that John will nurse by himself. As for cluster feeding, the boys haven't really done that to the signficance that I have heard of others doing. In the evenings they tend to want to eat more frequently - every hour or so, but I just nurse whoever is hungry at the time, usually both though!

  • I responded on the BFing board but I will here too for others. Mine have been cluster feeding for the past few nights from about 5-8 pm. I don't tandem much because they aren't great latchers yet. So I feed one and then the other, might have a short break, and then feed one and then the other again. I don't switch sides while they're cluster feeding.

  • Mine are almost seven weeks and EBF. We tandem at night only. I nurse on demand and individually during the day. Some days one will cluster feed and the other wont and some days they both want to. I use OUBU at night.

  • Congrats on exceeding birth weight and stopping bottle feeds! Great news!

I tandemed almost exclusively and would just feed both whenever one was hungry. Sometimes one would finish sooner than the other and in the early days, would fall asleep. So I just let the one sleep on me while nursing the other.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm doing a variation of all the above  tandem both every 3, then if one or other is more hungry between... That individual gets 1 on 1. Tricky as my 4.5 yr old needs/wants attention too! Fortunately she starts back to school this week so that'll help get her out and a good energy outlet.
