General inquiry... Exercise

So, with the new year here, does anyone have the resolution to keep/start exercising? I haven't exercised in a million years (or so it feels) but I'm going to try now. Anybody else doing the same? Anyone with advice?

  • I may try prenatal yoga. I miss running and spin classes. I used to work out 3-4 times a week but on said my heartbeat was too high. I am hoping that yoga will help with me.
  • Thanks guys!
  • In the same boat. Used to workout but since preggo haven't. I did get some prenatal yoga DVDs for Christmas so I plan on trying those out

  • I am the same and really want to start again since it has been ages. I'm having a problem with goal setting and how to start out since I'm obviously not going to be shooting for weight loss. Maybe just walking/jogging to start out? I've also thought about swimming since the bigger I get the easier the pool would be on my body. Not sure!
  • Same boat as well...but I noticed after doing a good workout yesterday that my restless legs didn't wake me up last night. So I'm planning to hit the gym at least a few times a week if it means getting a break from the jumpy legs.
  • I want to start, but I feel like that might not happen...

I do take very long walks 3-4 times a week (over an hour on hills). But, other than that I can't get myself to exercise.

Yoga bores me to death, and before pregnancy my go-to was running, which I don't feel comfortable with anymore.

So not sure what my plan is...

  • In the same boat with lack of working out. I used to be a yoga junkie but haven't found a prenatal class yet. Running was my prepregnancy go-to but haven't done that either. I'm just exhausted! I work on my feet and walk practically non-stop for 8 hours daily, so I'm getting exercise in, but when I get home all I want to do is rest. Hoping energy finds me soon
  • I'm the same...used to work out 4+ times a week and when I first got the BFP I was doing great walking and exercising but the past 2 months have been lackluster. Soo I started tonight with a prenatal yoga video on YouTube and loved it! My motivation is I want to be as healthy as possible during labor and I know that it's easier to lose the baby weight if you maintained a healthy pregnancy so that's what I keep reminding myself. Hope everyone can find their motivation and we can encourage each other!!

  • My first advice I always give is starting small if you need to, pretty much piggybacking/adding on to everything @Lauracox3‌ said. So even if you start with 15 or 20 minutes, twice a week it's so much easier to add time or days to. My next thing is always choose something you like to do for your main workout. Even if it feels silly- like taking a half hour to blast music and dance around your house. Something is better than nothing, and (for the most part) more is better than less.

To keep safe, just stick to moderate or lower intensity. I generally use the talk test for my intensity- you can carry on a conversation (3-5 words) without getting too winded.

Never forget- something is better than nothing, and (within reason) more is better than less.

  • I work out like ;4-5 times a week. I try to do cardio and can still keep a convo going, then trx for resistance training 1-2 times a week.
  • Chasing my two year old while barfing all day is a work out in and of itself.

I have no plans to start immediately but would like to soon.
  • I actually work out 4-5 times a week currently. I do it because I am overweight to begin with and have a history with pre-diabetes (controlled it before getting pregnant) so of course gestational diabetes is a big concern. Dr does not want me to gain more than 10lbs during entire pregnancy.

Whatever you decide to do make sure you check with your Dr. And definitely start slow and increase time or days from there.

I do 50 min of cardio, never taking my heart rate above 140. I also do some VERY LIGHT weights, I alternate upper body and lower body. I have heard excellent things about pre natal yoga and plan to incorporate that into my routine in the coming weeks.
  • I have been doing yoga 3 times a week since I found out I was pregnant...as much for mental as physical health! I was walking 4-5 miles a day until the end of November but now it's freezing! I was recently on vaca in Hawaii and swam every day. It is so relaxing and makes you feel weightless. I want to try to find somewhere I can swim a few days a week in place of walking.
  • I think it's great you want to get into it. Very healthy for you AND baby, and it will help with your delivery.

I am a weight lifter, and pre-pregnancy I was lifting crazy weights and going 4 times a week. Now I lift less, but I still make myself go weekly. If I can't get to the gym, I do cardio or kettle bells at home. All that matters is you are doing something.
  • My exercise plummeted since pregnancy started.  I'm really good at making excuses (the gym is too far, I'm tired/cold/blah/not feeling well, etc etc).  I've found that youtubing "10 minute workout" or circuit workouts, etc is a good way for me to do something to get my heart rate up a bit.  I have a weird hang up about doing core work while pregnant, even though its probably super good for you and good for labor.  My abs will be flaccid jello steaks by May.  But yeah, I'm all about the 5, 10, or 15 minute youtube stuff.  Better than nothing!
