Bigger size vs maternity pants

So my pants are tight, not sure if it is because the holidays or because I am 9 wks. But I don't feel like I am ready for maternity pants. Would a size bigger be a bad thing? Has anyone else avoided maternity clothes just by buying larger regular clothes?

Re: Bigger size vs maternity pants

  • My post was inspired by the one below. After I read the comments it made me question the difference btwn buying a larger size and buying maternity pants. I am not sure I understand the difference.

  • I regret not buying maternity clothes with my first pregnancy. I've already bought yoga pants, two pairs of sweat pants, jeans, and like 7 shirts from Motherhood Maternity during a sale and don't regret it one bit. I'm comfortable and the clothes are cute! Plus, this early they hide the bloat pretty well.

Buying a bigger pair of pants or two isn't a bad idea- you'll want/ need them for after you have the baby and you're waiting for all your old clothes to fit.

This. I weigh 5 lbs less than I did pre-pregnancy last time around and my old jeans still don't fit. I bought both and regretted neither.

  • Maternity clothes are way more flattering. Bigger clothes are just that when the only thing growing is your belly

  • Bigger clothes up to two sizes work fine for me, after that I need maternity clothes cause it is my stomach getting larger in proportion to everything else (up till two sizes its pretty much everywhere :P). I don't regret having the bigger sizes cause there is nothing more depressing than wearing maternity jeans 2 months PP. Honestly I really don't like maternity clothes cause I don't like stretchy stuff on my lower stomach. Even when not pregnant I almost never wear yoga pants/leggings/etc... I much prefer normal jeans. I'm hoping I won't really need true maternity clothes till its getting warm and I can just switch to dresses.
  • I bought about $200 worth of maternity clothes when I was about 15 weeks last time, because I was so excited. I ended up wearing only one thing. My SIL gave me a big bag of her maternity clothes, but she really liked those smock apron tops and I didn't, so the only items of hers I wore were three pairs of black maternity pants. I rotated those three pairs with a pair of non maternity pants (super relaxed fit) up until I delivered. I also was able to wear one pair of super relaxed fit regular jeans until delivery. I wasn't against wearing maternity clothes, but I gained weight in weird ways.

They say, use the same size for pants you'd wear without being pregnant, but for me, I never did get a very big belly, while a lot of weight instead went to my ass and thighs. So, maternity shirts were too big, while the pants were too small and tight. It was just easier for me to wear regular pants a few sizes up and longer non maternity shirts. It wasn't a vanity thing- my body just changed in different ways than what I was expecting. So, to answer your question, I did wear mostly non maternity clothes throughout pregnancy. (This is not a humble brag. I gained 35 pounds and had a 5 pound baby. At least 20 pounds of my weight gain was Cheetos and cinnamon toast crunch. My ass was ENORMOUS. Yet for whatever reason, I had a relatively small belly even at 39 weeks).
  • Personally I plan to buy a pair or two of pants one size bigger. I will wear leggings, yoga pants, stretchy skirts, my larger pants, and regular shirts for a little while. When that gets uncomfortable, I'll switch to maternity clothes.

I did something similar when I had my son and after delivery I was happy to have a couple of pairs of pants in a larger size so they would fit me then too.

  • Last time I bought maternity pants around 25ish weeks. They were more flattering and fit better then pants in a larger size.

  • Last time I didn't own maternity jeans. It was summer and most of my shorts were low rise enough to sit below my bump and never posed a problem. I only gained in the belly so buying a size up wouldn't of worked well for me.

This time I've been buying maternity clothes since the spring when we started trying. I'm a sucker for a good deal and have scored at least 5 pairs of gap jeans (which fit me best) and a few tips for under $150. There shirts are super comfortable and I like to contor the bump.

  • I love maternity clothes because they flatter your growing body. They are also made a bit longer so as you tummy grows, the will cover more. I think it's a better investment to buy maternity now. Working in an office setting and being due in August, it might be best to buy short sleeved blouses/tanks and cardigans that can be used when it gets warmer.
  • Maternity pants are awesome. I wouldn't buy too much at this stage until you know if you like full belly or just the band. But I find the pants very comfortable and worth the investment. I already picked up some full belly slacks as the first time around my office was casual and now it's not. Maxi dresses will be awesome come warmer weather and I will probably live in those with cardigans starting in the spring.
