Ear Wax!!!

oh boy, what an exciting topic! So, DS was at the doctors the other day for suspected ear infection. When the doc looked in his ears he said he couldn't see anything because they were so full of wax. Cue my face of horror. Doc didn't seem concerned and given the symptoms diagnosed him with one anyway. This was an urgent care doc, not our regular one so I didn't push the issue. My question though... How are you guys clearing ears? I use qtips carefully every day. Should I be doing anything more? I'm a couple months away from our next scheduled visit, is ear wax concern worth a special trip? This ear infection was triggered by pneumonia, not wax buildup, so it's not something currently causing DS discomfort.

Re: Ear Wax!!!

  • We use the QTips that only let you go so far into the ear. I do it mAubr 2 times a week but I probably should do it more- she makes it difficult.

  • Both my kids have this issue. Our pedi used a special tool to get some out of DS' s ears the other day and made a point to tell me not to do this at home. With DD they've done the picky tool before and some water ear wash thing before.

It's no biggie. Some people make more than others. My dad and I both are blessed with lots of ear wax. Woo hoo!

I just clean out what I can see with my finger or a washcloth.

  • We also use the safety Qtips probably twice a week. I can only clean them while I nurse her though, otherwise she's moving her head all over the place.

  • I just clean what I can see. I use a washcloth in the bath or just a finger if I happen to see some at random.

  • Our pedi told us to get some water in his ears in the bath so it comes out. So I lay him back for a few seconds and get some in there and it works. DS has a lot of ear wax too. From DH he also has this problem.

Don't be embarrassed. When I was 10 (and should have known better) I had to go to the doctor because I couldn't hear out of my ear/ thought it was infected. Nope, just plugged up with wax.

This happened to DH... last year! He's the worst about cleaning his ears.

I don't really clean DD2 or DD1's ears. Occasionally I use the washcloth in the bath if I think about it. Otherwise, i pick off blobs with my little finger when I see one coming out of their ears, but that's really about it.

  • I thought people with lots of ear wax were less likely to get ear infections.

As it is, both my boys have their dad's profuse ear wax. I'll run a q tip along the outside of the rest just to remove obvious wax.

  • I feel a lot better knowing I'm not alone! I won't stress on it and just mention next time I see the doctor. Thanks guys!
