Anyone having a delayed cord clamping with their C-section?

At my last OB appointment I forgot to ask if they can do delayed cord clamping for at least a minute--ideally 3 minutes--until after the cord has been pulsating a while to allow more blood to flow into the baby. Anyone else have this done, how did it work? Or anyone else request it and the OB agreed to do it?

Re: Anyone having a delayed cord clamping with their C-section?

  • My OB said they usually wait about a minute before cutting the cord during a c-section. Depending on the date of when they do mine, I may ask for them to wait a little longer than a minute. According to my OB, the earlier they are born the more beneficial it is. After they are full-term the chance of jaundice increases. I think that may still be a topic that everyone is not in agreement on (from what I've read).

I asked and my OB said she was in favor of it and planned to do so, providing it was safe. I think Baby 2 was a little hurried, she started pooping as she was lifted out... so may not have had delay....

  • They didn't delay chord clamping for me, but baby pooped in utero. Thusly why.
But most OB's (in the practice I'm in) are ok with it!
