LO has his first cold :(

Somewhere among all the visits with friends and family over Christmas LO picked up a cold. DH and I have it as well. It is a rather mild cold and there is no cough associated with it. Just a stuffy nose and sore throat. He has slept most of the day.

I am using the Nose Frida for the first time. LO hates it and I hate how he screams when I use it. But it works well.

We are also trying to keep him upright since that really seems to help. The swing is the only thing we have to put him in to keep him upright other than us holding him. So tonight LO will sleep in his swing in the living room while I sleep next to him on the couch.

Anyone else have sick babies?

Re: LO has his first cold :(

  • So sorry your LO is sick. Hopefully it will pass quickly. Our LO gets stuffy at night a lot and learned pretty quickly to tolerate the nosefrida so FX yours also learns that it makes breathing easier.

I tried doing the breast milk beforehand a few times and while it helped, he never seemed to get used to it and HATED it. The pained/upset cries were just too much for me to see if he'd adapt :(

  • Boo to colds!  So far LO has avoided getting sick, which I hope will remain the case.  I hope you all feel better soon!

  • My LO has his first cold also :(. It breaks my heart. No fever just a really stuffy nose.  I actually was just about to post a question about his cold, so I hope that you don't mind me hijacking your post for a second.  But I am worried about him getting dehydrated.  he has only had 3 oz of pumped breast milk in the last 6 hours.  He has taken a few sips from my breasts also but it couldn't have been anything substantial. and earlier today he wasn't eating nearly as much as he usually does.  I have tried to force him to eat but he is so tired he won't.  Does anyone know what I can/should do to get him to take down more milk/fluids?

  • LO also has his first cold, pretty tough one too.  Doctor said as long as he is having wet diapers, hydration is ok.  If he does not have a wet diaper within 8 hours time to go to the doctor.  Nose Frida works amazing for me.  LO doesn't care for it, but it allows him to breath so we continue to use it.  He takes long hot showers with me to help break it up and we also use saline up his nose (he hates it), but it helps so i continue to use it.  I would rather him cry for a couple minutes than choke on snot (which he has done a couple times now).  He is on the tail end of this cold.
Just keep an eye on temperature and hydration. I keep LOs head elevated to help drain his head and this too shall pass.

Hijack away! I don't really have advice. Just keep offering him the boob. With my sick LO feedings have become shorter and more frequent. He also isn't eating as much as I would like, but we are still getting wet and poopy diapers.

  • We've got our first cold over here too - really stuffy and a cough (no fever though). Because of the cough, we went to the pedi yesterday and were told basically to just let it run its course - humidifier, saline drops, nose frida, etc.

Also, I didn't know this as a FTM but apparently it's a big deal if LO's temperature DROPS. Apparently some babies get cold instead of a fever when they're sick. The doctor said to call if it gets lower than 97.
