shaving

I hadn't shaved anything but my pits in well over a month. Last night I promised my husband I would shave, and an hour later I told him he would have to shave me again because its not happening anymore this pregnancy! I can still get to the legs but the whole bikini area is out of question from here on out. But I really dont want to be a hairy beast in the delivery room :/

  • No joke, I have a small mirror in my shower just for this reason....I personally can't go without shaving. Has nothing to do with spreading my legs for Dr's, I just can't stand to be hairy.

This happened to me after I gave birth.  For some reason I can't stand hair anymore.  I went from periodically waxing down there to being a regular Brazilian getter.

  • No one will care if you're a "hairy beast" in L&D, I promise.

That said, I made it through most of pregnancy with DD being able to see well enough to shave. The very end was a little "go by feel" but even that wasn't bad.

  • I'm an esthetician so waxing is part of my repertoire! I haven't shaved in years, but I also do my own waxing because I just don't trust anyone else (and I've heard horror stories from some of my clients!). That said, I can still reach my legs (which I've taught DH to do anyway) but I don't think I can reach for my Brazilian. DH is not yet ready to do that sensitive of a wax, so I've gone jungle for now.

I may have to venture out and do some serious research on other local estheticians. Or maybe I'll just stay hairy. It's funny that I have such a fear of botched waxing. I've seen the results from it though and I want nothing to do with it!
  • I'm one of those women you will hate. I can literally count the number of hairs i grow from my armpit and I can get away with a good 3 weeks of not shaving my legs before there is something noticeable IF you look up close. I shave everything when I notice there's fuzz.  Pregnancy has only sped up the growth of the bikini area.
I'm the same. The only thing I "have to" worry about shaving is my bikini area. I do like to keep it cleaned up though, not sure what I'll do when baby is big. Probably stop caring.

  • I don't really have any self-consciousness when it comes to my nether regions and doctors, I figure that they've seen so many vaginas that seeing mine is not any more titilizing for them than the last one was.
Although I totally get the wanting to be hairless thing, I prefer to have absolutely no hair from the nose down. I come from a very hairy line of women so the day I was allowed to start shaving I'm convinced the sky opened up and there were angels singing and shit. So knowing that I won't bs able to shave at some point just made me come up with a plan that H thankfully is going along with. I'm going to get a mirror and when that stops working my electric razor is going to be back in action and H said he would help if needed.
  • I'm almost to the point of boycotting shaving the bikini area. The worst part of it is the fact I spent over $1000 on laser hair removal. I said after my son I didn't want to bother taming the jungle with my next pregnancy. IT DIDN'T WORK!!!!!! After bitching out the company they said "well, you may not have been compatible". However, with my consultation, they said was the "perfect" canidate and took my money.
  • I have been thinking about this for a few weeks now..as to how I'm going to shave down there when I cant see anymore...idk if I will be brave enough to wax or to go hairy
  • I use this bikini trimmer and LOVE it. You could use it blind and be fine (just use a little extra caution until you get the feel of it lol) and it gets really close, just not bald. Which is better imo, because there isn't any annoying stubble itch days later!

  • Last time I shaved periodically (bikini) throughout pregnancy but right before delivery I shaved it all off. I was thankful to have a hair free box when they stitched up the perineum. And hair free bit of recovery time to have the padcicles that I made sit nicely against the swollen skin. Ouch! I'll probably do the same this time.

I'm so glad you posted this! I worried I was the only one who just let it grow free. I get so sensitive and itchy down there, I feel like if I shaved, I would only draw attention to myself because I would be constantly itching my lady bits!

I do think a good trim with an electric bikini trimmer will be in order before delivery though... When you bleed and that blood gets all in your pubes... That's annoying.

  • A friend of mine was saying to go back to regular brazillians.. I got lazy ad stopped 6 months ago. The reason she said was when she had her first, she had to have a cesarean and try shaved her. She was saying the hair regrowth was so irritating a itchy, plus the pimples/rash and ingrowns made healing so much worse than it had to be. Next baby the day before cesarean she got a brazillian and said it was 1000 times better
  • I don't know how you all can do Brazilian waxes, I've done it 4 times and I can never do it again, it's soooooo painful!!! I shave every few days bc if my bush gets too long it starts getting itchy, I do wax my legs though ( that pain I can tolerate) In my first tri it looked like I was wearing wooly leggings, my leg hairs were starting to curl! Okay so I've never waxed, I've always been a shaver...I was thinking of getting my first bikini (and maybe more) wax when I go to Florida in February.  For those that wax, would you suggest "trying it out" before the trip, or do you think I'll react just fine if I wait until closer to the trip for my first one? Sorry if that's a terrible basic question.
Paging @KimberlyandThor2014 since she's going to be the best to answer this question.

However, in my non-professional opinion, waxing is more painful when pregnant.  The blood flow and swelling makes the area more sensitive.  I don't know if that makes it more likely to have a reaction or not, but it's something to keep in mind.  I don't know if I would go for my first time when I was pregnant, but I defer to K&T on this one.

I joke with hubby about him having to shave me but I think the only part I would have trouble with is missing spots. I've been shaving everything below my waist besides my thighs since I was a teenager so I could do it with my eyes closed. I shave my legs once every few months. The hair is so light, you can't see it unless you're really looking and it's so soft too. Now my pubic area is another story. That sh*t is rough and I shave at least once a week lol.
  • It's not so much the not seeing it as the lack of flexibility to reach it all as pregnancy advances I have found. Keep up the pregnancy yoga ladies!
I always vow to keep up with waxing but already just way too ouch.
  • Right now I can still see everything for the most part to shave but I will be getting a mirror when I can't anymore. I can't stand being harry and it makes me feel better about myself to be clean shavin down there.
Im sure the doctors and nurses could care less but I would like to be as happy and comfortable as possible for as long as possible lol

I won't lie, it hurts to get hair ripped out. Now, you let them know it's your first time and that you're pregnant and they'll take their time with you. And the waxer should be attentive to you : wanting a break or doing the other side. I know it's nerve wracking, but try not to tense up on the table and breathe. My trick: I would go after the gym (after I shower) you're so relaxed!

  • I have the schick Quattro with the trimmer end, best thing ever. You can adjust the trimmer head for the perfect length and it beats the heck out of trying to shave. Not sure I would have the nerve to try waxing since I have 0 pain tolerance at this point in pregnancy.
  • Like i said before I get waxed every month, the place I go is called European Wax Centers. The type of wax they use only sticks to the hair not the skin (like when you get your eye brows wax it sticks to the skin (thus causing your eyes to be red)).  My waxer knows that I am pregnant and she goes easy on me, tells me when to take a deep breath and it does help.  Also if you have one of them in your area and have never been they offer a free Bikini, Eye Brown or Chin for your first visit, and that's how I got started. I already shaved everything so i figured for half off I would get a bazillion for 22 dollars. I now go every 4-5 weeks and my hair has all ready started to grow in thinner and it doesn't itch at all when growing in.   A regular bazillion is 42 bucks which isn't bad at all (in my area they are typically about 60-80 depending on where you go.

    Hubby also likes it..

I really want to try waxing, but I'm a big ninny about it. Is it really as terrible as the movies and the kardashians make it seem? ;) in general, is it totally safe for pregnancy? Anything to avoid?

I can't stand jungle bush... Or any bush for that matter. I'm sad to hear the doctors and nurses in L&D aren't like "Why thank you screaming pregnant lady, for your well shaven vagina and for taking the time out of your busy pregnancy schedule to look beautiful for us." No?

    Edit bc Mobile hates me.

  • I just shaved my legs and bikini area for the first time in a long time. I've been so exhausted I haven't even tried but I feel so much better after all the work. TMI but I shaved a little lower too and DH enjoyed it. * shrug * Now that I'm getting my energy back this week I might make a better effort. Mostly, I've been missing the smooth leg feeling.

I have never heard of that. I also had a c-section with my first. I trimmed ahead of time, but never clean shaved. They did nothing to me in the delivery room. They cut open your stomach. There's no reason they would shave you.

  • Okay I just came from the doctor and I asked her about shaving my wolfmonkey and she said no shaving, just trimming. The hairs are there to protect from infections... not the first time i heard that one...

Incorrect. We shave everyone with an electric clipper ( some places use razors) who is having a c section if they are not adequately trimmed. No one gets a Brazilian, just a 2" strip from the top of the pubes down. Pubic hair harbours bacteria so it is an infection risk if left long at the incision site. If you trimmed as well as an electric shaver would the nurses wouldn't have bothered to redo it.

Also a c section isn't really done through your stomach. It is your pubic region, low enough that almost all women grow pubic hair at the incision. There are some countries where vertical incisions "through the stomach" are more common but they are hardly ever done in North America or Europe.

I would just go when you need the wax done. Because if you go and hate it you won't go again. It really is not that bad, and the Brazilian areas hurt the least in my opinion. It is likely to hurt more pregnant, so you might try some Tylenol before you go and drink lots of water!

ETA anndddd let it grow a little before you go. Really long or really short will hurt more.

I was also shaved (some) for a c section. My scar is pretty much right at the top of my public hairline, with stray hair or two right above it. I remember I shaved before my scheduled section and the nurse applauded my efforts lol. She still touched up a bit too. But yeah, c sections (the horizontal cuts which are most common) are not on your stomach.
