Nursery themes

Now I realize it might be a tad early for this, especially since most of us don't know whether we're having a boy, girl, or dinosaur yet...but hey - it's fun, and pretty much all I can start planning now since I don't yet have my house, any more than a 3 hr radius of where we'll live, or even a slight idea of our income to start planning any other baby things. I'm hoping planning a hypothetical nursery before I can actually act on it will curb my tendency to over-buy and give me something not so scary to think about for now :)

So...themes! Anyone have any unique ideas? Or want to weigh in on mine? Boy or girl I want a superhero theme. I'm not a huge comic nerd, but DH is...and since I've recently learned that it DOES matter, we've decided on Marvel over DC. Surprisingly, this is making me actually a little excited if I am to have a girl (which I swear I know I am!). I still really want a boy, but then again how bad - ass would my daughter be if she was raised in a super hero room!?

Re: Nursery themes

  • Super hero would be so cute either way! We've decided not to find out the gender this time so the nursery will be pretty low key. It's currently something of a junk room, but it has big windows and lots of light. The walls are a pale blue and I don't plan on repainting, but I love blue on girls anyway. I'll probably use lots of white and some yellow. I only have a vague idea. I need to start pinning!

No real theme I just want to do fun colors! I am team green so this is how I plan to keep the excitement of not knowing what the gummy bear will be until they get here.

  • Our nursery is currently wild animal safari theme - the walls are pinkish purple and we have decals of cute little elephants, giraffes, and monkeys. We will keep it that way if #3 is another girl.

If it's a boy, I would love to do a vintage airplane theme. But my DH is pretty opinionated about things like that, so I am not sure if he has other ideas or not.

We are not doing a theme and we didn't with our first either. Here is why: babies spend little time in their rooms and the fancy crib bedding that really makes it look cute, you can't use half of the stuff it comes with anyways (bumpers, crib quilt, etc). You are better off getting a bunch of sheets and sleep sacks and spend your money elsewhere. Sorry to sound like Debbie Downer, but it's true.
We never bought the crib bedding either for that same reason. So we just bought solid color crib sheets. But then we did buy a cute little lamp and hamper in our theme. Then found some wall decals that match our theme to put on the walls. So we have a theme but didn't waste money on stuff we wouldn't use like the bumpers and crib quilt.

  • Well I am super lame then because not only did we not buy anything for the room, we didn't paint or decorate either. Our walls are a neutral beige and we left it that way.

However, last night for DS#1 who is almost 2, I got him a twin sized bed and went to the store and bought his first bed set. So now his room does have a theme: Star Wars. :)

  • I'm not quite sure whether we'll be moving before baby arrives or not...and we currently live in a one bedroom. So that makes this whole thing kind of tricky. I'm not even sure how it will work if we don't move but I suppose we'll make it work. Give baby their own little nook or something.

However if we DO move, and I am hoping we do, then we will get to do the cute nursery thing. I am torn between doing a music type theme (I collect records and have some cute ideas) or Snoopy/Peanuts. We live in Sonoma County, where Charles Schulz was from, so there is no shortage of Snoopy/Peanuts things to be found around here and I just think they are adorable. I guess I've got some time to figure it out.

  • We're not really doing a theme. Leaving the walls light brown as they are now. I do however want a giant giraffe or something plushy like that for the room and maybe jungle themed bedding.. :)
  • Add me to another superhero theme :) If it's a girl I'd love to do pink and gold with possibly some of my vintage Barbies.

  • If it's a boy - Star Wars. If it's a girl - princesses and sharks. We live in a 3 bdrm cape cod. We have no room for a nursery. DC will room share with me for 6 months before sharing with brother or sisters.

My oldest daughter is strange...she is obsessed with sharks but loves princesses, too.

OP, love the Marvel Superhero Theme!
    Boy or Girl.
  • I'm moving my DS into a big boy room and keeping the nursery exactly how it is. We did grey and white with bright orange accents. Works for boys and girls so we're set! i attached some pics from when we finished decorating, looks the same today but not as clean:)
@christi421 where did you get the orange dresser!? I love it.

  • We wanted to go super neutral with everything so we are just doing gray & white. I bought 2 gray & white chevron throws on Black Friday, and I want to string up some tulle pom poms in the room (super cheap and easy) to dress it up a bit, but other than that we're putting in a wood floor, doing white walls with a gray accent wall, we got wood colored cribs and dressers, we're getting a gray & white chevron area rug, and then I'm hoping to find a nice used glider that I could possibly re-upholster with gray and white. Aaaaaand...that's about it lol.

Maybe I'll get real crazy and get some funky letters to spell out the babies' names and hang them on the wall. haha. But probably not. I'm just not that crafty.

No specific theme. We're planning on neutral colors, most likely gray, with a pop of color one LO arrives and we know the sex. This is my inspiration.

  • For DS, I painted one wall gray and did a bunch of colors. I put a few things on the walls but still have stuff that was given to me at my shower that still isn't up yet.

This time around, I will still use gray as an accent wall color and will either do blues/greens for a boy or pinks/raspberry colors for a girl.

Part of our issue is knowing we will be moving in the next 1-3 years (depending on job situation) so we wanted to keep the painting/holes in the walls to a minimum.

  • @mischiefmama‌ - love love love it.

We're doing turquoise walls (they were painted that color when we moved in), gray furniture, gray and white rug, with pops of orange-yellow. For boy or girl.
  • If it's a girl we've decided on a feather theme, if it's a boy I think we will do bold colors.
  • I'm moving my DS into a big boy room and keeping the nursery exactly how it is. We did grey and white with bright orange accents. Works for boys and girls so we're set! i attached some pics from when we finished decorating, looks the same today but not as clean:)
Cute!  Love the pops of orange and also how you have the books on display.  Children's books really are works of art in their own right.

  • We're also doing a Superhero themed nursery. Both DH and I are huge nerds. I found an etsy shop that has amazing walls decals of alphabet super heroes (ex: B is for Batman). Depending on whether the squish is a boy or girl will determine paint colors.

  • DH and I just had a beach wedding in October, so I would love to do something nautical with a preppy vibe for a boy or girl. I even have an entire secret Pinterest board just for nursery ideas. Never too early to plan, right?
  • For a boy nautical (my H's request)

Girl will be woodland fairy or hot air balloons

  • We're doing white, grey, and a pop of either teal or light pink.

I wanted to do the same but with white and grey chevron, but chevron seems to trendy now I don't know if I will. We'll see. We plan to move in May-ish so though we have an extra room here right now (its SS's play room currently) we don't plan on doing anything to it.

  • Not sure what colour we're painting the room yet, but we have a white crib and white dresser. I'm going to buy ikea bedding, it's 7$ for the duvet cover - he won't use it until he's older, but it will drape on the chair until he's ready for it in bed. We did colourful ikea bedding for DS and he uses it now, didn't come with bumpers so no money wasted. image

  • So what I've learned is stay away from bedding sets! Good to know!

We'll paint the walls light blue, regardless of baby's sex. I don't have a theme, but I'm hoping to strike a classic vibe and decorate mostly with toys (wooden ABC blocks on a shelf, fuzzy bear on display, etc).

I have a low dresser that would double as a changing table and a matching bedside table...trying to decide if we should paint them (white or gray) or if painting them would leave them sticky to the touch for all eternity. :-S

We did a nautical theme for my first, my daughter and this baby won't have one most likely. This baby will move into my sons room at first so if it is a boy we will keep it and if it is a girl we may repaint or she may just get it how it is. Third baby problems. Edit to add I want to move within a year or two so I don't want to do too much here.

  • I'm freakin' THRILLED to decorate the nursery. We're team green but I've always been set on a black and white nursery. There will be grey in there too, but a lot of funky prints (stripes, some dots, etc.).

Because these colors are tricky to find, I asked for a sewing machine for Christmas (and got it, score), and I'll be making most of it myself! ! I'm kinda a home decor freak, and the rest of my house is black/white/grey/silver, with a lot of red, so it will flow into the nursery well.

I may add a pop of coral if it's a girl, and I haven't decided what color to accent with for a boy. But that'll come later :)
  • @christi421 I love the orange and grey!! I never thought to combine those colors before, may have to steal that idea ;)

If it's a boy, we're going to do a space theme since my husband works for NASA. Girl, tbd haha. image
