Alison or Allison?

I'm having a hard time deciding on a spelling and the nick name for this name. I like the spelling Alison (it's traditional, Scottish, German, similar to Alice -to honor a family member, which is why we have chosen Alison/Allison). But, I don't like Ali for a nick name bc to me it's pronounced Ah-li instead of Allie like I prefer. So, give me your thoughts on the spelling and nick name spelling as well, please. Fwiw, mn will be Lynn.

  • Alison nn Ali

  • I think either way is fine, but if she grows up in the states she will likely have to correct people often if you choose Alison.

  • I prefer Allison mostly because I think people will misspell Alison her whole life.
  • I'm Allison so I'd go with that spelling. I never had issues with people spelling my name until I moved out of the States, I mostly get Alyson here… not cool.
  • I went to school with an Alison nn Ally. Personally I prefer the 1 l but probably because I am used to spelling my friends name this way.
  • Alison but why not just use Alice?
  • He doesn't want to use his Grandmothers name (Alice). When I was searching for a name, I knew I wanted an A name to honor her. Alison was a good fit I thought. It's the spelling that's tripping me up. I'm also having issues with other family members pressing this name on us (they won't know the name til the birth) and MIL grates on my nerves. Ava is my other first name choice.

  • My name is Alyson and have always had to spell it out to others, but I'm sure the Alison/Allison's had to as well. So you aren't really going to win in that department haha. Although using the 'y' in place of the 'I' in my name is non-traditional, I didn't hate it growing up.
  • I'm an Allison and also go by Allie. I'm always spelling my name out for people.

  • DD is Allison.  She doesn't use a nick name.
  •  Alison here and I don't use a nick name either. I've never allowed people to do that.

I have had to correct the spelling all my life, but less so as an adult-once you have it right on your drivers lisence and taxes, and at the employer, it goes along ok. In school you do have to spell it for each new teacher.

I'm not sure why my mother chose this spelling-I think she thought it was unique, which at the time I think it was. I knew MANY Alison/Allison/Allysons in school but I was usually the only one with my spelling. It's not a name you hear much anymore.
  • I am an Alison (nn Ali) and I have never had a major issue with misspellings. I do say "Alison with 1 L" if it is something that will matter if it is spelled incorrectly. I was named after my Grandfather (mn Allison) and technically 2 Ls is the masculine version of the name. However, it is so rarely used as a male name it doesn't matter anymore at all. I just thought it I'd interesting the history of the name.
