How do you do it?

When out with LO alone, we are rarely out long enough where a bathroom trip is in order. LO isn't fussy when wet so if shopping she can last an hour or so without being changed. Most of the time my mom is with me and can watch LO while I pee or to wash my hands. Traveling over the holidays 5 hours one way had me see how tough it is maneuvering with LO in the bathroom. I would change her, take her to DH then go do my thing. Maybe throw in a one handed hand wash.
My question: when alone and needing to change LO, wash your hands, pee, etc. and no one else is there, and no stroller how do you do it?

We just got back from flying sans stroller. Wearing DD made it a lot easier. It's a little awkward, but totally doable to pee, wash hands, etc while baby is in the ergo. Also, not having the stroller makes it easier to get into bathrooms.

The nuisance I haven't sorted out yet is how light can I travel with her diaper bag? I'm so used to having the stroller to carry the diaper bag that I've kept it stocked with whatever I *might* reasonably need. So half the time while traveling I just took diaper, wipes, and changing pad into the bathroom with us and left the fully stocked diaper bag outside with DH.

Thanks! I'm probably an under prepper and haven't done a ton of traveling with DD but her diaper bag only has the pad, diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, travel sanitizer, a ready made bottle, a baby food+spoon, bib and pacifier, and a couple toys. If going shopping or to eat I throw in the cart cover and if cold a small blanket.
  • Some places have those seats in the stall with straps if u get really desperate. I always have the stroller and take it in the handicapped stall
  • I either wear DS or have him in the carseat or stroller. I agree peeing with the carrier on is interesting but possible.

  • Wearing the baby. I just have an old snuggli and its totally possible to pee while carrying her in it. For diaper change: fold out mat on changing surface, pop her out of the snuggli, do the change, put her back in snuggli, pack up, wash up.

Now for traveling light ... I haven't figured that one out yet. And keep switching between diaperbbag and backpack.

  • Wear the baby, wear a long skirt so you don't have to mess with a waistband, peeing in much easier this way!

I flew alone across the country and back and managed to pee all by myself several times ;) on the plane the flight attendants will often help hold if you need!

I also packed just enough diapers, wipes, Etc for my trip and minimal toys to keep the bag light. Everything extra went in the suitcase or was purchased after arrival.

I wear DD in the baby carrier, change the baby, put her back in the carrier, pack up, pee, wash the hands. It's easier with leggings than jeans. Sometimes getting to the pants' buttons can be tricky with the baby in the carrier but it's always doable. I can usually pee while DD is asleep and not even wake her up. Flight attendants often offer to hold the baby for you if they see you traveling alone.

  • I usually use the handicapped stall and bring the stroller in. At the mall I use the mother's room washroom (or a family washroom) which are big enough for stroller. Once I was at IKEA and the handicapped stall was out of order on the second floor so I just held LO on my lap. If I'm going to be out running multiple errands I try to go pee when I'm at a store with a family washroom, just so I know I can do it with the stroller, and I'll change his diaper too, just because I have the chance so I don't have to worry about the time later when of course there won't be a place to do it ...

  • I do the diaper change first with the diaper bag slung over my shoulder.  When I go I just hold LO in my left arm, then do the one-handed handwash.
  • I always have the stroller or the carrier with me. I seem to remember w DD an occasion or 2 where I just had to balance her while I wiped/pulled pants up/washed hands tho, so.... not recommended but do-able in a pinch!
