nutrients and morning sickness

I was told by my doctor that I need to change my diet and eat more nutritious foods for the baby to grow. However, I have such a hard time eating anything because I am always feeling like I'm going to throw up! Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do differently?

Re: nutrients and morning sickness

  • I don't know, my midwife kinda said the opposite. She said the baby will take what she/he needs and if m/s is super bad, just eat what you can. It's better to eat something than nothing at all. And she said not to stress over it in the first trimester.  ::shrugs::

  • I haven't had my doctor tell me that but I do feel guilty about not eating healthier. What I do is when I'm not feeling nauseous, try to eat some fruit or veggies, or if I make pasta or something for dinner add extra veggies. Another option I have been wanting to try is making smoothies with (fresh or frozen) fruit with spinach
  • I was also told first tri was about survival. Before pregnancy I ate really healthy, now all I can seem to eat are mostly carbs. Make sure you are takin prenatal vitamins that's is extremely important.
  • Keep in mind that during the first trimester, you really only need about 300 extra calories per day. Make sure you're taking your prenatal vitamins, and as @MarathonHiker‌ said, it's better to eat something, even if it isn't the most nutritious, than nothing at all. If the MS is really awful, consider asking your doctor for a script for Zofran or Diclegis.

  • It's important to eat healthier not just for the baby but for you as well. I found the cravings insane but what helps to eat in small portions few more times per day. If you stay away from caffeine and too much sugar in the morning, your bliss sugar won't go nuts later in a day and you won't feel so out of control with food.
I tested this on me: try to make oatmeal (with water, add in a bit of milk at the end just to milk it up;), pinch of cinnamon, half of banana. It will fill u up and helps fight nausea. For snack it's vegan gluten free vanilprotein shake with almond milk (or water) blueberries and spinach. You'll be amazed how good you'll feel throughout the day if you eat healthier and then you will not gain way too much either. I started with heavy foods this pregnsncy and became sick from it so I decided to not listen to my cravings and be more mindful of what I'm putting in. I do exercise also so that helps fight the morning sickness and it gives you extra kick of energy! Good luck!
  • Okay these comments make me feel a little better. The only thing concerning is that I am not on a prenatal vitamin. I have horrible stomach problems and the prenatals make it worse. I am taking iron and folic acid and those are the two the doctor said are most important at this point. I wonder if there is a prenatal that will be easy on my stomach.
  • Of course everyone is different. But you asked for an advice, so I simply gave you options which work for me. I personally gag when I eat too much junk...for obvious reason. Salty snacks help as well. But the best thing for you it seems, is to play a little with your food and figure out yourself what works for you. Good luck!
  • I love fruits and veggies but I tried to eat fruits
    Other day and almost
Vomited lol. I'm tryig my best to eat whatever I can keep down (I'm now on Diclectin and a prenatal and also a special 5mg folic pill)

  • As for prenatals..Raw One Prenatal is great (no preservatives and contains ginger for sickness)

No, I didn't. Getting your posts mixed up. I never asked for advice. I just responded to yours saying everyone is different.  You just kinda made it sound like all everyone here needs to do is eat healthy and exercise and it will make us all feel better.  Perhaps I read into it wrong.

  • You're right...I had the posts mixed up. Sorry . On other note, I'm not forcing anyone to eat healthy. It's a common sense, when you're pregnant and not a moron to be mindful of what you put in...But that's me.

Dude. Stop making people feel bad if they can't stomach healthy food. Eating unhealthy food will not make your child have 2 heads.

Op, eat whatever makes you feel better. You can eat better when you feel bette
This. And you shouldn't give people the impression that if they don't eat healthy, they'll gain a ton of weight. You will gain weight no matter what. Diet and exercise didn't stop my 45 pounds last time. And seriously - I ate a very healthy diet.

OP, do what makes you feel good for now. Like PP said, it's all about survival.

  • When i had really bad morning sickness with the first pregnancy i used to drink a boost or ensure to make sure i was getting a decent amount of nutrition along with my vitamin, chocolate and vanilla were my favorites.
  • @MarathonHiker‌ LOL at the stomach avatar. I mean, are we going to have to look at it for the next 9 months??
I'll be damned if it wasn't just changed?! I swear 5 minutes ago it was a stomach.

You mean my Popeye's craving won't give my kid a prehensile tail?

OP, I agree with others, eat what you can keep down. For some people smaller meals close together help. I know that I generally get nauseous when I don't eat. Personally, I'm not sick (yet?), but I'm almost entirely disinterested in food (exception: Popeye's extra crispy drumsticks). I've been nursing one cup of coffee for 2 hours because nothing sounds like I want to put it in my mouth.

  • What high horse? I suggested healthy food and all of a sudden, you're calling me conceited, etc. Ladies, your insecurities are your own. Don't bring me into it.
  • Eat what appeals to you.

Even if you lose a few pounds during the first tri, your baby is going to get what he or she needs. You don't even need to add calories until the second tri, at which point you should be eating 300 calories more than you would ordinarily eat to maintain your weight.

Last pregnancy all I wanted was brownies, buttered pasta, lemonade, and apples. Salad was the worst followed closely by every other vegetable. I would have been deeply unhappy if I'd had GD, but thankfully didn't. I only gained 24 pounds, and our baby was a healthy weight and length. And - not that it matters - but I'm petite and not remotely Southern and would go to town on some fried chicken and waffles right about now.
  • ^^^FYI, GD is not caused by your diet.

Yes. I know. However, if you have it, you do need to alter your diet. As someone who subsisted entirely on carbs throughout her pregnancy, this would have been problematic.

No worries. My sister ate pretty healthfully and had it both pregnancies. Plus, I'm older (38 during first pregnancy and 40 this time). Since family history and maternal age are both risk factors for GD, I was worried I would too. Keeping my fingers crossed I avoid it this time as well.
  • Sorry you're feeling so sick OP. Last pregnancy I lost about 22 lbs by twenty weeks I was so sick. DS was still born over 8 lbs and healthy. The other ladies are right, baby will take from you (I got a few cavities as a result- couldn't replace the calcium he was taking but that was seriously the only thing that happened).

To the pp on the high horse, you don't know everything and haven't experienced everything, if she were able to eat healthy food this post wouldn't even have been made.
  • What high horse? I suggested healthy food and all of a sudden, you're calling me conceited, etc. Ladies, your insecurities are your own. Don't bring me into it.
Healthy food is great, I don't think anyone's telling anyone to go eat a pallet of gravy. But when someone is saying that they just can't stomach most food, then it's not really helpful to say 'eat healthy and it will solve your problems.' Most OBs will tell you that the fetus is going to take what it needs from you right now, you just have to keep yourself upright. And if all you can eat is Ritz crackers and steamed broccoli, then that's what you eat. For most people the sickness lets up and then you can actually eat well.

Also, I am big and kind of a bitch. And Southern. But I'm a big healthy Southern bitch. So says my doctor, and that's the person whose opinion matters.

ETA: That last link. Hoooo boy. Nope. Nopers McNope-topus.

    Is wakeupworld.com a relative site of vaccinesnever.net and theblackhelicoptersarecoming.com?
I would love a pallet of gravy.

Andplusalso @denisajacob -- you can GTFO right now. I'm assuming your link was your "cute" little way of calling PP in this thread stupid since you got called out for acting all holier than thou, but disability of any sort is NOT something to be joked about or thrown around lightly. I have several close family members who have physical and intellectual disabilities, and I don't take kindly to your unnecessary post. You stepped WAY over bounds. So long.

  • WTF are you talking about???  You went from eating healthy to pesticides causing autism.  So are you saying that you shouldn't eat fruits and vegetables because they might have pesticides on them??

    YOU MAKE NO SENSE.

    Exactly
  • I'm sorry for all the other ladies but I'm glad I'm not the only one! I tried to eat an orange the other morning and almost vomited with the first bite. I can occasionally eat a few baby carrots or some raspberries but otherwise, it's a lot of carbs. Looking forward to the second trimester for sure.
  • I have been very sick even the thought of the prenatal made me nauseous. I was on a very natural prenatal and had to switch to gummies I found at target for the time being. I'm hoping I will be able to cut out the junk the 2nd trimester, but I purely in survival mode and if prenatal gummies are all i can do I feel it is better than nothing! Good luck!

I'm nauseous all the time among other things but I'm loving on ice water. I hate any food that would make me have to open my mouth wide or anything warm but I was unsatisfied eating pretzels and ice all day - like my stomach growls and I feel like I'm going to barf at the same time- so I started doing frozen smoothies which allowed me to get in a slightly more diverse food supply to stop the growling. Smoothies are my new best friend. Please don't hate me for saying the word smoothie! Just sharing my experience.
  • My doctor said eat what you can. So that's what I'm doing. Potatoes, pop tart, the occasional salad. Whatever doesn't make me puke at that current moment.

OP, have you tried gummy prenatals? That's all I can stomach. I actually have to remind myself they are vitamins so don't eat more than two.
