Advice on night weaning?

I have been BF DD since she as born and she has always nursed several times at night. I am getting pretty fed up with it since I also work full time. Some nights she still gets up every 2-3 hours and some night she can go 5-8 hours before wanting to nurse. She eats three meals a day and snacks so I really don't think she is hungry at night, I think it is more for comfort than anything.

If I am going to night wean would people suggest I do it cold turkey (no nursing for any reason from bedtime to morning time) or should I do it gradual ( tonight she has to go 5 hours, tomorrow 6 hours etc).

What did other people do? What should I expect as far as his long it will take her to catch on to the new routine? I feel like a FTM with weaning becaus I never got this far with DS (dried up by 10 months) so weaning wasn't an issue.

Re: Advice on night weaning?

  • I used dr Jay Gordon's night weaning method with DS1 successfully at 14m. I've heard many have been successful with his method:

  • Most nights DD nurses 2 times.  When she is teething even more often.  Every once in a while she will nurse only once and I get hopeful.  A few people told me that their babies stopped nursing in the night around their first birthday.  I am really hopeful that DD will do this, but I'm not holding my breath.  I am going to give her 1 more month and then try something.  Good luck!
  • Not quite sure how it happens for us, once we moved dd in her own room she pretty much stopped waking up. When she did get up I sent DH in there to rub her back and soothe her till she fell back asleep. Now she usually slees through the night and only occasionally gets up once a night to eat.
  • Thanks for everyone's responses.  She is still in our room (need to finsih painting and setting up DS room before we can move her) and I know that is part of the problem.  She is a light sleeper and I swear she has night vision so if she wakes up and sees me it is all over.  I am not proud of it but there have been times I have hid under the covers when I hear her waking only an hour after feeding her and she is able to go back to sleep then.  I have tried having DH get her when she wakes up but she is a mamma girl through and through and wants nothing to do with daddy in the middle of the night.
