Can newborns be overtired

My mom and step dad both swear that newborns cant ever be overtired but i swear against that! There have been days were my baby is up almost all day then come night time he is cranky and has a hard time going to bed. sounds tired not hungry. They said only toddlers get this way

That is a lot of swearing. I'm not sure if adding the word "over" accomplishes anything. They are tired. Or very tired. Or exhausted. Anyway, yes I think babies can be so zonked that they get cranky.

Yes they can. If dd doesn't nap throughout they day she gets very cranky and has trouble falling asleep. This has been especially true over the holidays!

Babies should not be up all day. Sleep is healthy.

Yep to all of this. On Christmas I kept baby up for about 2.5 hours because of the celebration and by the time I tried to put her down for a nap she screamed for a while before settling down. Normally she goes down easy but she was overstimulated and overtired and it was more difficult to get her to settle down. Babies can definitely become overtired and that usually creates problems with sleep. They sleep worse when they are overtired.

Uh, I can't say YES!!!!! With enough exclamation points! It's one of the very few things that makes LO really freak out...like you'd send CPS in to take our kid because you would assume we were hurting her from the way she screams when we miss her window of tired without getting her to go to sleep. Christmas Eve night and Christmas night sucked because we pushed it too far and she was a wreck!

There are like eleventy billion books and theories about baby sleep but I have yet to see one that does not advocate napping.
