How much zofran are you taking??

I have yet to see my obgyn but got a prescription for zofran from my family DR. for severe vomiting/nausea. I took 4mg and it didn't work, so I doubled up and now am taking 8mg, twice a day. Wondering if that amount is a normal dose given by an OBGYN.

  • I was originally prescribed 4mg every 8 hours. It wasn't enough so my doctor said I could take 8mg at one of my doses, but should stick to 4mg at the other doses. Definitely get an OB appointment and make sure someone is following your care and monitoring your symptoms and adjusting your prescription appropriately. (You also may run into trouble with insurance not paying for refills when you run out of pills early because you are taking twice the prescribed amount. Another reason it's important to get the prescription modified officially.)

  • It is never advisable to re-dose yourself without consulting a physician. Regardless of what the medication is and how harmless it may seem. Please consult your OB and take your recommended dose until then.

  • My doc gave me the dissolvable zofran and the pills in the 8mg I take one pill at about 3/4am (im not sleeping much) and then when I wake up I take a dissolvable one. I take a fiber supplement but I was already having awful constipation so instead of severe its just normal constipation loll. Good luck, if youre anything like me you'll need it. The zofran only helped me sometimes. I suggest sucking on crystallized ginger before you even move along with it.
  • Got b6. Unison? I'll try that too. Ty

I asked how much you were taking, not if it's advisable to " re dose".
  • Thanks for those who actually had a direct answer to my question. For the others, I'm well aware and familiar with zofran and its side effects. This is not my first child nor is it my first time with zofran; it had just been awhile.

After discussing my issue with my OBGYN, my daily dosage was prescribed @ 8mg/3x or as needed. Unfortunately, my insurance( as someone stated above) will only cover 1 pill a day so I'm stuck paying cash until my "quantity limitation" is approved. $1200 a month for family insurance and I can't even get medicine covered to keep water/food down. Good ol' US of A health care.

Glad your baby is doing well!

Insurance is a beast with Zofran. Mine pays but will only allow the pharmacy to release 4 days' worth at a time so I am constantly going in for refills. It's like I have to prove to them that I *really* need it. Well.... I do!!

  • My ob just prescribed me a new med, Diclegis, after being on Zofran and it not working. I just started it yesterday so I'll have to see if it works :)
  • If I ask, "is the sky is blue?", I want to know the color. Not if it has clouds in it or if it's going to rain. The direct answer will suffice. Not unnecessary additional information. If you have no knowledge of the question, then why put in your 2cents?
