Loss of a twin?

I'm hoping that maybe someone out there has experienced this at some point. We found out we were Pregnant with twins at 6w 3d. We saw both heartbeats. I had some bleeding the following week and we discovered that one of the twins heartbeats was gone. So devastating. This was at 7w 3d. We went back at 8w and baby B was growing right on track and still has a HB. Baby A was exactly the same.

I haven't bled since, but my dr did see a small blood clot in my uterus and she thinks that's why I originally had the bleeding, because baby A is still in there with a perfect sac.

I might should add that I've had 3 miscarriages (one of those was twins also). I am on a letrozole/trigger cycle this time.

Has anyone lost a twin and continued on to a healthy pregnancy?

Thanks ladies! Trying to find comfort during this stressful time.

Re: Loss of a twin?

  • I haven't been through that, and I don't have any advice, but I want to say that I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. Sending good thoughts your way.

  • @divinemsbee‌ Thank you so much! It's hard enough dealing with fertility treatments and worrying about miscarrying..but then add losing one twin and its a nightmare. My heart hurts for baby A, but I want baby B to continue on perfectly. Just not sure how baby A will affect B.
  • My cousin was a twin in utero. When my aunt miscarried they thought they had lost the baby. Turns out she was a twin and they had only lost the one. My aunt didn't take care of herself and continued to smoke during the pregnancy, blew smoke in baby's face while feeding her, and continues to smoke through her cancer treatments. My cousin is fine, physically. And today is a mom, herself. It's possible that your baby b will be fine. Sorry for your losses and wish you the best with this pregnancy!

  • My friend had a vanishing twin and her pregnancy continued on to give her a healthy baby girl. Good luck!

My daughter had a twin we lost around 7 weeks. She is now a happy, healthy four year old. Vanished twins are actually far more common than was once thought - something that is only being noticed more now due to the fairly routine use of early first trimester ultrasounds. I've seen figures that say up to 1/10 pregnancies may start as twins, but only ~1/70 end up as twins.

It screws with your head a bit, and at once you're not quite sure how to feel because you may be happy about the living baby but devastated about the loss of the twin. I still think "what if..." even now, and have a hard time around baby twins. I'm very sorry for your loss, and I hope everything continues well with the other baby.

Incidentally (and the fact that all surviving twins mentioned in this thread fit this pattern brought it to mind) I read some time ago, and I have no idea where it was so can't vouch for accuracy, that for reasons unknown, the surviving twin is more likely to be female than you would expect from chance. I don't recall how much more likely, but it was significant. But again, anecdotes, not data, and I don't remember where I read it.

  • I have a former colleague who lost one twin & went on to have a healthy baby boy. Wishing you the best :)
  • Hoping everything turns out okay for you! I've heard more positive outcomes with twins than negative.
  • We lost one this pregnancy and as far as I know, I'm still pregnant (I'm 8w2d, baby A's heartbeat was confirmed again a few days ago). My RE said it would have no effect on the other baby.

  • I haven't personally expierenced this. However my mother did. I was a twin and she miscarried the other baby.
  • When this happens what do they do about baby A? Do they have to remove the baby due to possible infections like they do with a single miscarriage? I think everything will be ok with baby B he/she is definitely a fighter!
  • Thanks everyone for the comments! They are definitely comforting. With my miscarriage history, it's so easy to feel hopeless, BUT we are remaining positive.

@lacideshae51‌ They can't do anything with Baby A. My dr said sometimes the baby will be reabsorbed, but it doesn't look like that's the case for me. So she said I will more than likely pass it. I'm on progesterone suppositories so she thinks that's what's keeping A in there. She thinks once I stop the progesterone, I will start bleeding. I have always had missed miscarriages. My body doesn't naturally reject the babies. Always have to have a d&c.
  • I am so sorry for your loss of baby A, but I am praying that baby B continues to fight and becomes your take home baby. Thought and prayers to you and your husband. Best of luck to you.

I don't think I could've said it better than Sunshine just did.

I am so very sorry for your loss. And as you can see, it's possible that it does not impact baby B one bit, and I hope that it doesn't! (Hugs)

  • I cannot say that I have experienced this as a mother, but I can say that my mom insists that I had a twin in gestation and that I survived after the other died. I can't make any predictions for you, but I do feel for you and your loss and hope that everything turns out alright.

  • Thank you all so much! I haven't posted much on the board..part of me is afraid to; I would hate to have to come back and say I miscarried (again). Everyone's posts are extremely helpful to me though.

I will be 10 weeks tomorrow. The last two ultrasounds (weekly ultrasounds) have looked good for baby B! It is measuring right on track with a strong HB.

I've had some bright red bleeding off and on (talk ab a heart attack), but my RE says its "normal" for my situation. I'm just praying that baby A won't affect B.

Thanks again so much for your kind words!
  • @uncgirl6885‌ Do you mind me asking how far along you were when you lost a twin? Also, did you have bleeding?
  • I know someone who was a triplet and only she made it. I think it is fairly common. DH just said he thinks it is like Thunderdome...eye roll. Hugs and good luck!

  • This exact thing just happen to me. At 7 weeks I had two beautiful strong heartbeats. I am also doing fertility treatments so have weekly U/S and when I went in for my 8 weeks check they noticed that baby B did not have a heartbeat anymore and had stopped growing but baby A is still looking strong. Prayers for you, I know it was disheartening for us but I tried to not stress too much for te sake of Baby A. I am 9w1d praying for a healthy preganancy for everyone.
  • @Sigmalove‌ I am so sorry you are experiencing this same thing. It's so disheartening. Praying that you have a successful and healthy pregnancy with A! Have you had any bleeding?
  • @sigmalove @gator2014 I have no experience with this. Just wanted to say I am sorry for your losses. I'll be sending positive vibes. I hope your remaining babies keep growing strong!

  • I actually had 2 episodes of (TMI) a gush of blood with clots and then spotting after that happened for a few days. Same exact thing two different episodes. So much blood that I for sure thought I was having a M/C. And both times I went into my doc office the next day and everything was perfectly fine. However, they could actually see where the blood was coming from in the U/S and it was in front of the baby. Which they said it is a lot safer. They believe the blood is from the FET procedure.
  • Very sorry for your loss. My brother's twin was lost as well and my step-mother was absolutely heartbroken. Hugs to you. I will tell you that my brother is in perfect health.

No advice but we are expecting twins this time around. Our very first pregnancy ended in miscarriage. We have a 6 yo Daughter now.
I was shocked when I was told It's twins. Very nervous something similar will happen. Tomorow is 10 wks for me as well.
Prayers for you and your little person.
  • @Sigmalove‌ I have had 3 episodes of bright red blood. One was just spotting. The other 2 were heavier. Dr saw clots and fluid in uterus though, so they think that's what the cause was of the first one. I just had the 2nd bleed on NYE night. Dr didn't seem too concerned since last week at US, Baby A's sac was starting to collapse and move towards cervix. Thank you for sharing your story. Please keep in touch!

@uncgirl6885‌ That is horrible! So you never passed the other twin? They told me that I may and they seem to expect it. I'm sorry you went through that. Thank you for your encouragement. I may have additional questions in the future.

@Lois172000‌ congrats on your twins! Please don't let my post worry you. I'm sorry you've had to read it. I know how hard it is to see what others are going through and not worry that the same thing will happen to you, especially when you've already experienced a MC. I will be praying for a successful twin pregnancy for you!

Thanks everyone for the comments and support. I remind myself daily that God is in control!
  • @gator2014 and @ Sigmalove  I'm so sorry you guys are going through this. I haven't personally experienced the loss of a twin, but know others who have who carried their remaining baby to term without issue. Allow yourself time and space to grieve this loss, as it is a huge loss despite still being pregnant. Sending you both big hugs and positive vibes for good updates at your next ultrasounds.

  • Just thought I would update everyone. We had an US Monday at 10 weeks and we saw baby B with a strong heartbeat. He/she was moving around its little arms and legs. We got a profile pic and you can see the nose and all!

Trying to stay positive, but I'm still worried. Especially since I've had some light brown spotting today. Ugh!

Baby As sac is smaller, so my dr thinks that's why I had the bright red bleeding last week. She said it may or may not come out. But not to freak out if I have any bleeding (right!).

Does anyone else have any updates?
  • I had an apt Monday. My doc basically said the same thing, don't freak if it's meant to be, it will be and if it's not nothing any of us can do to change it.
My next US is the 22nd. I will feel better once I see them again to make sure my hitchhiker is still hanging out. Waiting game! Staying positive! But let's be real.. nervous and anxious!
  • @Lois172000‌ So did you get an ultrasound Monday?
  • Nope just the 10 wk meet with the OB apt. Her office doesn't do doppler til 12 wks so no heart beat check either. Some new finding it's not good for the babies early on.
My US on the 22nd is for one of the Tests offered, could be the first trimester screen. My brain is not 100% right now.
I meet with MFM on the 3rd and will have a full US and consult with them as well because of our history. 1 MC and our DD who was born with Spina Bifida and 22q.
Lots to be nervous about but we're excited just used to having to prep for bad things or not so easy things.
  • @Lois172000‌ Oh, I'm so sorry. How did you find out it was twins? Early US? I will be praying for you and your babies. I have to constantly tell myself that I cannot control the outcome of what is going on and that only God is in control!
  • Our first us was at 8 wks. I was looking at the screen and was like.... um... ok. It's been awhile since I've had to do a TV US. Why are there two circles.... just as the tech did a double take and said "OH, do you see what I see"?? I said um.... yeah I think.... She said "There's two"!! I started laughing and crying and head went spinning. And here we are...
After that apt had the 10 wk apt Monday with just my doc.
