Question about weighted lap pad

Hello!

First I want to apologize for introducing and running, I had a premature baby so life has been pretty hectic!

My 2 year old son has suspected autism. In OT we are working on him staying close and not taking off, and ways to handle his his meltdowns. We decided to get him a weighted lap pad made for him to use in public, but I am wondering how heavy it should be. I know for blankets its 10% of body weight plus one pound, is that the same formula for a lap pad? (I thought maybe it should be lighter since its not distributed all over his body) I also want to be able to put the lap pad in his backpack for him to carry around for sensory stuff also. He weighs about 31lbs. I thought about making it 5lbs so it would last a little longer. Any thoughts?

Thanks you! I hope you all had a happy holiday!

Re: Question about weighted lap pad

  • Yes, the girl who is making it was going to work on it this weekend and we don't see OT again until Monday so was hoping to figure something out before then :)

I am also looking into getting a vest soon.

  • Yea, I decided just to wait and talk up OT Monday. I figured there was a simple formula like there is for blankets but I can't find one so I'll wait ;) thank you
