15 weeks just got a new job

So I'm 15 & 1/2 weeks I just got a new job thru a temp service doing assembly line work...it didn't pose any visible threat to my pregnancy or me as far as I could tell I've only worked there one day and don't have to go back til after Christmas...but my parents keep telling me I have to tell them I'm pregnant because if something goes wrong they could be held responsible and obviously I dont want to put me or my baby in any danger but I'm worried they will fire me because I'm pregnant and the guidelines from the temp agency is that they can get rid of u at any point for no reason at all basically the woman there is fairly nice but I really think I'll get fired if I tell her AND I need money what do u guys think?

  • You have no obligation to tell them. Additionally, you are employed by the temp agency, not the manufacturing company. If they did decide you were not working out on the assembly line, the temp agency should find you another position. I would personally wait until I have proven myself and then discuss with the temp agency first followed by the company you have been placed with.

  • I would double check with your doctor that it is safe for you and your baby.  Also make sure the manufacturing company has an emergency contact (or three) who can tell them right away if you are injured and need any sort of medical attention.  You have no obligation to tell them and if you feel it might jeopardize your employment I wouldn't.  Out of curiosity, has the temp agency given any indication how long you will be with the manufacturing company (are you there for a short term project or do they intend to hire you on)?  If is it is short time I would definitely not bother telling them.  It may be worthwhile to change your preferred type of work with the temp agency to something more clerical and less physical so you next assignment will not have any complications .
  • By law, you are not obligated to tell your employer. The day before I started a new job, I found out I was pregnant and didn't tell them until a month or so later. I started showing already and they were guessing that I was pregnant but nobody ever said anything. You got to prove yourself as a good employee first. When I told my manager and let him know about high risk pregnancy and complications that I have to deal with as well as a need to see a doctor more often, he actually advised me to keep quite about it. That way there wouldn't be any discrimination when deciding whether to keep me or not after maternity leave. I happened to not qualify for FMLA as I just started the job. So I am at a mercy of my employer on whether to keep myself employed after going into labor or getting rid of me. So far It sounds like he really likes me and does everything he can to keep a job for me after 12 weeks of a maternity leave.
