Keep Awake After Eating

My 4 week old LO seems to be perfectly content going right back to sleep after his daytime feedings. (He eats about 2.5 oz every 3-4 hours and it takes about 15 minutes to eat and then we keep him upright for 20 minutes).

Should I let him do this or should I encourage him to stay awake? I have read different things about how long they should stay awake between feeds and I am thoroughly confused!!

  • Does he have active awake times? Possibly before eating? After sleeping?

I know a lot of people go by the whole "eat, play, sleep" thing, but eating can make babies fall asleep and I wouldn't be one to wake a sleeping baby. If LO falls asleep while eating I let him be. Sometimes we play, eat, sleep. I don't think it matters what order it happens!
  • How is he doing at night? Unless he has days/nights confused, I'd follow his cues for sleep. It's unbelievable to me how much this baby sleeps - DS1 wasn't like this at all. But he seems to be doing normal stretches at night (one long stretch of at least 3 hours followed by several 1-2 hour stretches), so I let him sleep when he wants to.

  • LO sleeps well at night also...3-4 and a drowsy bottle and right back to sleep. He doesn't have consistent awake times, and we sometimes have to wake him to eat. His poor internal clock just doesn't seem to work right!

According to my pediatrician and my Lucie's List email...babies will not develop a sleep schedule until they are at least 12 weeks old, some will develop it later than that.
