Xp car seat safety...

I know I haven't been in this group for years, but this didn't seem like something for the May 2015 board. The picture is my ex-husband and our 56 lb 7 y/o. On numerous occasions I have asked him not to put our son in the front seat and he's informed me I should mind my own business. I feel like this is my business though, now that I have photo proof (because driving selfies are irresponsible but also concrete proof) I don't know where to go from here. I'm not looking to take his parental rights, just hoping he will somehow get that this is serious. Any idea who or where I would report this? I'm not overreacting for the wrong reasons like he claims right?

  • Please dont feel like you have to be a long term poster to post here.

Unfortunatly im not sure of the answer to your questions. Maybe our mod @becwheat does.

This also might be a good question to ask parenting as well. They have more posters and if im remembering right they have a few posters who are very knowledgable about carseats.

  • At 56lbs and 7 years old he should still be in the booster in the back seat. This would be a definite sticking point for me because it only takes one careless driver. That said, you should look into car seat laws in your state because it varies greatly. It could be a safety concern, but not illegal in your state.

Photo selfies while the car is in motion...huge concern for me. Look into cell phone and driving laws in your state as well to see if that's illegal. Many states are creating laws against using cell phones while driving.

  • What an idiot.  That's pretty much the only thing I can say about your ex.

I agree with Jellybean, that kid needs to be in the back seat.  I'm not sure what all the rules are with boosters and whatever (my DD is only 1.5 year old), but I know for sure that front seat is not a go for a long time. And I also agree with checking up on the safety laws in your state.  This picture is/would be proof for you to bring to the police.  Tell them that you've told your ex multiple times about your concerns with the child's safety and then found this photo [where you found it].  Tell them what laws you suspect he's broken and request that they speak to your ex because your ex won't listen to you.  If the picture is on social media, see if the cops will treat you as an anonymous tipster when they go talk to him.  Because idiots are everywhere, especially on Facebook...

  • Thanks guys, I am well aware of our state laws, and those require our son to remain in a booster in the back seat until 4'9" and 80 lbs. DS is 4'1" and 56 lbs, so well below the limit for front seat riding. It was a Facebook picture a friend shared with me.

This is a tough situation. Do you have a lawyer you could talk to about this?

Also try legal aid they could refer you to recourses that will help you protect your ds.

Saftey is number one and should be with both parents. Hope you get this figured out soon

Thanks, our divorce and custody is dragging on an on (filed for divorce Jan. 2013 and our divorce hearing has been pushed back 5 times putting us in June 2015) so for other incredibly difficult reasons I'm calling a lawyer next week. I will bring this up to him

Is he even wearing a seat belt? I seriously don't even see one!

I was hoping the lack of visual was due to the angle and his coat, for DHs sake it better be at least...

It is hard to tell. But you could always talk to your ds about the saftey of seat belts. This way he alwaus buckles himself in(when he isnt with you) and is taking his saftey into his own hands.
