Ladies, I try not to really clog up the board with my personal problems, etc., but I really need you. I just got a call from my sister that my mom had E-coli in her blood. I have zero idea what that means and my sister just left it with nothing good. I am not consulting Dr. Google b/c I do not want to go that rabbit hole. If any of you (who are smarter in medical stuff than me) know anything about this, I would appreciate it.

Now, most of you know that my mom has been very ill since pretty much July. She has been living in a rehab facility b/c she was to sick to go home but couldn't stay in the hospital. Two weeks ago, she got a bladder infection and we were told it was caused by E-coli. I have no idea how she got it or anything. Sunday she was rushed to the ER with severe pain in her kidney and they saw she has a massive kidney stone. They had to operate yesterday and put a stint in. Now we have this and something else showed up in her urine.

I am really kind of overwhelmed right now. She sounds so weak and sick and her fever keeps spiking. I honestly have no idea what will happen and if she will make it through the New Year.

E. coli is a bacteria and treatable with antibiotics; when it enters the blood stream it is called septicemia. Also, kidney stones, particularly large kidney stones, can cause infections that can lead to septicemia.

I know this is all super scary. Take deep breaths and remember that antibiotics take time to work. For now they most likely will be treating your mom with the antibiotics and fluids. The infection will make your mom tired and weak.

Just as a side note.... I have a lengthy history of kidney stones. In 2001 I had a stent placed in my ureter because I become septic from the infection the stone caused in my kidney. I was hospitalized for 6 days. Believe me when I say that it wiped me out! I have very little recollection of those days. Only sporadic, fleeting memories because I was sick. So it will take a lot out of your mom. I'm sorry you are going through this. You, your mom and your family are in my thoughts and I hope your mom has a speedy recovery.

I am so sorry your mom is not well. E Coli is a bacteria. It generally is associated with food poisoning, but it may be able to originate from elsewhere, too (I am only an expert as far as the food aspect is concerned). I hope that they are able to get her feeling well soon. So many (((hugs))).

@PetraStonegirl Thank you! I thought that is what it was called, but I didn't want to consult Dr. Google just in case. Our biggest concern is she has been immuno-compromised for so long that they may not work. Does that make sense?

Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry your mom is going through this.
As others have said, E coli is a bacteria, and in older people, is the most common cause of urosepsis (bacteria in the blood, from a urinary tract infection). The fact that she was having pain in her kidneys was likely from the bacteria going upwards, from her bladder (typical UTI) to her kidneys.
Being immunocompromised definitely increases risk of infection, so makes it easier to get sick, but there are great IV antibiotics against it.

@megrae12‌ I just saw this and I am sending big hugs to you and your mom right now. This is part of what I do every day. The E. coli as others have said is likely from a urinary source. It is a very treatable infection. They'll likely start out with the big guns antibiotic wise and then change antibiotics based on the sensitivity of the bug. Being immunosuppressed definitely makes it more easy to get an infection like this but if they have her in the right antibiotic there's no reason why she shouldn't respond. They should keep an eye on her blood pressure. I'm so sorry you're both dealing with this. Keep us updated?
