Cloth Diapering

Some laundry questions

So I'm happy to report that we have successfully been cloth diapering for at least a month now, and I really appreciate all of the great advice and NCDR entertainment on this board. I do have a few wash questions though, based on things that have come up recently.

I got a PW pail liner for Christmas. I washed it with my normal wash routine (inside out), and at the end it was full of water, and there were some suds in the water. Am I washing it wrong? Is this a frequent problem?. I have an HE top loader, and I do rinse/spin, plus warm wash with extra rinse, using Tide to line 1. I ended up dumping out the water and removing all of the diapers, then doing a spin with just the pail liner.

I try to get wash in early enough that I can get everything on the drying rack before I go to bed, but sometimes that doesn't happen. Is this a big problem? Am I risking mold letting the spun out diapers sit in the washer overnight (maybe 8ish hours)? No issues so far, but I was wondering how big a deal this was. I try to get sleep whenever I can.

Can I leave the rise snaps snapped, or do you undo them every time you wash? It hasn't seemed to be a problem so far, but I get worried that it will cause some sort of issue. I use OS pockets.

Oh! And one more NCDR question... I looked at the picture linked for TJ's chicken recipe. How much chicken does that call for? I was going to try to make it tonight, but I only seem to have one (huge) chicken breast in the freezer, so I thought that may work if I halve the rest of the recipe. I'm really excited to try it!

Thanks!

Re: Some laundry questions

  • A lot of times I remove my pail liner after the wash cycle (non-HE TL here), place in bucket to carry upstairs, dump the water out in the bathtub and hang on clothes pin hanging thingy over tub to dry. After I've removed the pail liner then I do my extra rinse and dry the rrst of my diaper laundry. I haven't had any issues with the pail liner not drying well even if not fully wrung out. I do leave my diapers snapped too...no need to put extra wear on the snaps by unsnapping every time. No help from me on the other questions as I don't know.

You're not doing anything wrong. No need to spin it out. Just wring it out and hang it to dry. If you have to restart your washer for your final rinse, just dump it out before you do that.

I try to get wash in early enough that I can get everything on the drying rack before I go to bed, but sometimes that doesn't happen. Is this a big problem? I only had issues with this in the summer when it was really warm. You should be ok.

  • Paging @TJ1979‌ for the chicken question...

(I usually use a small pack of chicken breasts. If they're thick, I cut them into smaller, thinner pieces to ensure they cook all the way through. I've only made it a few times yet, hence the page.)

  • However much chicken you want really. As long as it fits comfortably in the casserole dish with enough room for the rice to nestle in between.
You can do it with that one large breast, but I would cut it so it cooks all the way through before the rice gets dry. You can halve the rest but don't have to.

  • I unsnap the rise on the poo diapers so I know to give them an extra check to make sure they're clean.

I think it's safe to say, quite a few people on this board would disagree with a bit of the information in that link. I don't think as a general rule most people need baking soda or even detergent and their initial prerinse. And stuff like storing in a wet pail? No. No. No.

Umm, yeah, I question the advice given there.....why would anyone rinse the diapers after removing from the washer (or did I totally read that wrong) also, if the diapers stink when you remove them from the washer they're not clean and need a better washing not a rinsing. https://www.thinking-about-cloth-diapers.com/washing-cloth-diapers.html has much better information on washing cloth diapers.

  • Since the poster isn't very active and the blog mentioned a specific kind of diaper, I just figured it was:image

  • Using detergent worked for me. Also, wet pail storing is an option. I personally prefer Dry pail storing. Also, rinsing after washing is an extra step taken to remove any detergent residue.
