caffeine

Hi Ladies! It's 2am where I am and I am wound up, not tired at all and feel like I could go for a run (if this baby wasn't sitting on my lungs). Then it hit me: I drank coffee this evening. I had a friend over for coffee and cookies around 8pm, and although coffee has never really affected me before, I think it just kicked in. Now, I'm not concerned, or stressed, and I did google, but all you can find on google is "DON'T DRINK COFFEE WHILE PREGNANT," I'm wondering; is it just me? Or do you find that while pregnant the caffeine affects you more? PS: I know I haven't been posting here in the last month or so, but I do check in and I'm wondering, do you like the name Oskr Thegroouch? I really love it, and I think it is so original and cool, but I need to know if everyone else in the entire world loves it too. Just Kidding! :p

edit: I've been drinking regularly throughout the entire pregnancy so far!

Re: caffeine

  • I should have mentioned that, I'll try to edit it now. I have been drinking coffee all along!

  • I generally drink decaf, but caffeine has never really affected me much. I don't have an issue sleeping if I drink caffeine before bed. I would imagine drinking it so late could be keeping you up though!

  • I found the caffeine effect had to do more with age for me. I used to be able to drink it whenever and sleep just fine. Once I hit about 25, I became an old lady and it would keep me awake if I drank it after 7pm.

  • I used to be a quad shot latte, twice a day kind of girl. When we found out we were pregnant, I switched to just regular coffee. But I have noticed that it seems to do the trick. Now the rule is no caffeine after 4 or I'm tossing and turning all night.
  • I feel like caffeine affects me a little more when I'm pregnant.  Does that mean I avoid it?  Definitely not!  I don't think I could function with out my coffee :)  I can't drink it after four or so, though.

  • I don't think it has an effect on me at all.
  • For me it depends on how exhausted I am that day. If I had a normal, low stress day drinking caffeine after lunch is usually a bad idea. It's it's a really busy exhausting day I can drink a whole can of Mountain Dew before bed and sleep just fine. I don't drink soda often though so that could factor in as well

Exactly this. My body is just getting old.

  • I have noticed a change recently where if I have any caffine at any time of day I have trouble sleeping at night. This just started in the last week. In the past, as long as I didn't have caffine after 4pm I was fine.

This is true for me too. I have a cup every morning, but after about 3-4, it'll keep me up, pregnant or not pregnant.

Ditto. I will say that I've limited my caffeine intake this pregnancy, so when I do have some I usually notice the effects more than before.

  • Well there is definitely no more coffee later in the day for me in the near future! Thanks for your responses, glad I'm not alone! I just woke up(it's 1:30 in the afternoon).
  • You can drink 1-2 cups of coffee daily. You shouldn't go above that. I personally have up caffeine entirely for my first pregnancy and have not done that for this pregnancy. I drink 1 cup of coffee 4-5 days per week. Less when school is out. I also eat some dark chocolate. It might be annoying that it is keeping you up, but with the amount you've had don't worry about it not being safe.
  • Prior to pregnancy, I was a 3-4+ cups per day person.. bad work habit! I cut it down to just having a cup on days I was reaaaaally dragging. Maybe once or twice week? Haven't had much at all since about 18w.

Had a cup yesterday afternoon and it killed me! Headaches, shakes, and it kept me up way past my bedtime. My caffeine tolerance is definitely more sensitive now.
