Lip Ties

So I suspected that R has a lip tie and his pedi confirmed today. She said it's "pretty tight." Honestly I can't say that it is causing any issues, except that he still nurses every 2-3 hours around the clock. He also has reflux. He's growing and gaining fine. He's 6 1/2 months old.

The pedi recommended trying some form of sleep training (cutting back slowly to 1-2 nursing sessions a night) to see if his night nursing is just sleep associations or really because he isn't efficient enough during the day and needs to eat. She feels it's most likely sleep association.

Anyway, does anyone have any experience with lip tie and no tongue tie? Good resources for research?

Did anyone choose not to have a tie clipped but it ended up causing issues later?

Most things I can find are about tongue tie or the combination, not just lip tie.

Re: Lip Ties

  • No advice unfortunately b/c my LO had tongue tie only, but that's awesome you already made it to 6.5 months without issues!
  • we did not get c's clipped. He needed a nipple shield to latch because of it, but we were able to wean off that after a couple months.

He fell and tore it a month or so ago, so we don't have to worry about any future issues.

  • We never got E's lip tie fixed. It wasn't super tight, but tight enough to cause serious damage the first 2 months of nursing. She's almost 2.5 now, and no issues.

  • Both my girls have/had lip ties. The dentist said that they would resolve on their own, so we opted not to have them clipped. DD2 fell & tore hers, too. We've just changed the way we brush teeth so that we don't hurt them. No other issues & DD1 is 3.5.
